Patty Smith: "Just Kids"

Sono un fan di Patty Smith da sempre. Per questo ho letto con grande interesse questo libro che racconta le esperienze di Patty Smith quando viveva con Robert Mapplethorpe e non era ancora "Patty Smith" come la conosciamo oggi. 

E' un racconto intenso, scritto molto bene, avendo sullo sfondo gli anni '60 a New York: passioni, amori, vite bruciate, tenerezza, esistenze che si intrecciano, gli esordi...

Un libro molto bello che fa apprezzare Patty Smith anche come scrittrice. Ne consiglio la lettura.

Pensieri di Natale - 1

Siccome si avvicina il Natale, credo possa essere utile, almeno per me da un punto di vista neuropsichiatrico, dedicare qualche post ai libri per il Natale.

Scrivo questo post solo in italiano dato che l'emergenza "libri" è un problema schiettamente tipico del nostro povero Paese.

Per prima cosa voglio dire chiaramente: invece di regalare baggianate inutili (cravatte, sciarpe, borsettine, dopobarba puzzolenti, pantofole, cinte, ecc...) o spendere una barca di soldi in gadget tecnologici sciocchissimi, REGALATE LIBRI!

Anche se il destinatario del vostro regalo sovversivo si incavola, insistete, non perdetevi d'animo e REGALATE LIBRI1

Ci sono alcune grandi categorie di libri da regalare per Natale.

Iniziamo con i libri "scenici" da scaffale. 
Si tratta di libri che probabilmente il destinatario del regalo forse non leggerà mai (però non è sempre detto) che però fanno un figurone in libreria.

S. Bellow: "Herzog"

Questo libro è un classico della letteratura americana. Il romanzo verte intorno alla figura del professor Moses Herzog,  le sue vicissitudini, i suoi ricordi, le sue lettere... Ambientato in America nel secondo dopoguerra, è un libro affascinante anche per questo tipo di ambientazione e caratteristiche di quegli anni.

Ovviamente non svelerò la trama; devo dire che si tratta di un romanzo molto bello, che si legge con grande piacere. 

Consiglio la lettura a tutti i tipi di lettori/lettrici, soprattutto se giovani. In questi giorni di autunno è un romanzo particolarmente indicato per sprofondare sulla poltrona con una buona tazza di tè caldo (magari mentre fuori piove...)

This book is a classical work of the contemporary American literature. The protagonist is Mr Moses Herzog, a professor, with his history, memories, letters...

The story is set in America after the 2nd world war: this settting, in my opinion, makes this book even more fashinating.

Of course I have no intention to add further details: I can only say that it is a very good and pleasant romance. I suggest its reading to all kind of readers, above all young readers. I think that in these rainy days this book is a very good reading while resting on an armchair with a cup of hot tea...

Masanobu Fukuoka: "La rivoluzione del filo di paglia/The one-straw revolution"

Continua il mio periodo zen accompagnato da altrettante letture. In questo caso si tratta di un libro particolare perchè descrive l'applicazione della filosofia zen alla coltivazione della terra. Si tratta di un libro "pratico", ma nello stesso tempo filosofico, spirituale e religioso. Il lettore trovaerà la descrizione dell'esperienza di vita dell'autore nella definizione ed applicazione dell'agricoltura naturale, ma anche numerosi spunti di riflessione sull'assurdità degli stili di vita che oggi subiamo passivamente. Per chi poi desiderasse creare un orticello domestico ispirato ai principi dell'agricoltura naturale di Fukuoka, troverà questo libro di grande utilità.

Lettura consigliata a tutti i tipi di lettori. I giovani potrebbero poi trovare giovamento nel leggere questo libro che sazia il cuore e lo spirito.

My period of "zen-culture" is continuing supported also by interesting readings. This is the case of a peculiar book describing the implementation of the zen philosophy to agriculture. This is a sort of handbook but in the same time I could say that it's also a book of religion and philosophy. The reader will find the description of the author's experiences in defining and using the natural agriculture approach but there are also many occasions to think about the absurdity of our lifestyle models. 

Those wishing to create a home garden inspired by the principles of natural agriculture will find this book extremely useful.

I suggest the reading of this book to all kind of readers, in particular young readers will find this book extremely interesting.

Shunryu Suzuki-Roshi : "Mente zen, mente di principiante/Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind"

Essendo ormai entrato a pieno titolo nel trip dello Zen non ho potuto fare a meno di acquistare questo libro e, ovviamente, di leggerlo. Si tratta di una raccolta di considerazioni del Maestro Zen Shunryu Suzuki sul significato dello Zen, sulla pratica della meditazione e sulla visione Zen della vita e del mondo.

E' un libro certamente molto interessante ed utile: non è un manuale di Zen e non si insegnano tecniche di meditazione. L'autore, tramite un metodo dialiettico (sembra quasi un'intervista) cerca di fare luce sulla visione profonda che sta alla base dello zen. 

Un libro da tenere in considerazione soprattutto in questo tempi oscuri.

In these days I have the fixed idea of the Zen Philosophy and for this reason I have bought and read this book. This is a collection of reflections and considerations of Shunryu Suzuki about the meaning and sense of the Zen approach, about meditation and the Zen vision about life and reality.

It's surely a very interesting and useful book but it's not a handbook and the author doesn't teach meditation methods and practices. Shunryu Suzuki provides some ideas and reflections at the base of the Zen Vision.

This book, in my opinion, requires proper attention above all during these times of darkness.

Yoshida Kenkō: "Tsurezuregusa/Ore D'Ozio/Essays in Idleness"

Ooooh! Finalmente un bel libro. Ho passato queste settimane leggendo dei libri talora veramente molto sciocchi: libretti scritti da giornalisti italiani il più delle volte. Talmente sciocchi che non sono riuscito nemmeno a finirli. Indegni di essere commentati qui. Soldi buttati. Mi scoccia pure di aver in qualche modo foraggiato queste aride speculazioni editoriali che si fondano su un nome di richiamo e che dietro non hanno che il vuoto assoluto. 

Attenti! Guardatevi bene dal comprare i libri cui fanno grande pubblicità o sono in bella mostra nelle librerie perchè si tratta il più delle volte di robaccia di scarsissimo valore. La "roba buona" si promuove da sè e bisogna cercarla perchè la nascondono. Ci vuole fiuto, ci vuole gusto, ci vuole passione, ci vuole un libraio competente di fiducia (e dove sono???), ci vuole fortuna. Tanta fortuna.

Vabbè, lasciamo perdere le polemiche e concentramoci sulle cose serie. Dicevo che quello in questione è veramente un bel libro. Si tratta di pensieri, riflessioni, considerazioni del grande scrittore giapponese del XIV secolo Kenko. Sono parole ricche di poesia ed eleganza capaci di trasmettere una grande calma... Da leggere in solitudine e silenzio.

Ovviamente consiglio questo bellissimo libro ad un lettore/lettrice dotato di sensibilità poetica e di gusto: per gli altri dico solo che non è roba per voi...

Finally I've found a good book. I've spent these recent weeks reading silly books often written by Italian journalist. So I suggest you to carefully avoid to buy (and consequently to read) highly promoted books directed to a large public or well exposed in the book shops. Quite always these books are rubbish. Good books do not need commercial support and you have to look for them.  You need passion and a little bit of luck.

Well, leaving behind polemics, I want to dedicate this post to a classical work of the Japanese literature. "Tsurezuregusa" is a colelction of thoughts, reflections, considerations of the great Japanese writer Kenko. These words are highly elegant and full of poetic inspiration. This book must be read in silence and loneliness.

Of course I suggest the reading of this excellent book to readers having a poetic sensibility: to the others I suggest to read something else because this work is not good for you...

Esther Singer Kreitman: "Deborah"

Ho sempre avuto un debole per la letteratura "yiddish": queste opere rimandano ad una cultura scomparsa (o semi scomparsa), una componente essenziale della storia europea. Mi piacciono le ambientazioni, i personaggi che vengono rievocati, la malinconia profonda che attraversa questo genere di letteratura. Per questo ho acquistato e letto questo libro che a pieno titolo rientra in questo filone letterario. 

Una storia raccontata in una prospettiva tutta femminile all'interno di una famiglia ebraica polacca all'inizio del XX secolo dove si confrontano e scontrano tradizioni, desideri di modernità, rituali religiosi, l'emergere della figura femminile in un contesto che relega la donna ai margini...

Un bel libro, una lettura interessante.

I have always had a sèecial interest for the yiddish literature: these works evoke a diappeared culture, an essential component in the european cultural landscape. I like the scenarios, the characters described in these books, the deep melancholy... For this reason I have bought and read this book which can be included in this genre.

The story is reported within a totally female perspective in a jewish polish family at the beginning of the XX century. Here traditions, modernity, religious rites and the Deborah's desire (the main character of the book) to assert her own personality as a woman clash in an environment where the female figure is considered of scarce value.

This is surely a good book and an interesting reading...

G. Smilevski: "La sorella di Freud/Sigmund Freud's Sister"

Devo dire che ho letto questo libro spinto dalla curiosità. La storia inizia con un incipit molto interessante, a cavallo fra la realtà storica e la narrazione letteraria. Ovviamente non rivelerò in questa sede la trama che, ripeto, trae spunto da un vicenda molto avvincente. Dopo questo inizio così originale e affascinante, la trattazione procede, a mio avviso, a rallentatore e perde completamente la sua verve iniziale. A me, dopo un po', ha suscitato una noia non irrilevante. Tuttavia altri lettori potrebbero essere coinvolti dalla lettura meglio del sottoscritto. Chi può dirlo? Se però scoccerà anche voi, io vi avevo avvisato.

I've got to say that I have started reading this book with great interest. The story begins in a very interesting way being halfway between a historical reality and a pure novel fantasy. Of course I've got no intention to describe in details how the story goes: it however has a very fascinating base. Nonetheless, after such a good beginning, this book tends to dramatically slow down losing completely its initial verve. Actually for me it became a little bit boring. Yet other readers could find this book rather different being more involved in the reading than me. It's difficult to say. However, if you'll find it boring, I have warned you in advance...

E. Cioran: "L'inconveniente di esser nati/The trouble with being born"

Diciamo subito che, perdurando la mia precaria condizione di salute, un libro come questo potrebbe, apparentemente mal prestarsi come lettura ideale per chi non se la passa proprio benissimo. Sarebbe come suggerire ad un depresso di leggere "Il Libro dell'Inquietudine" di Pessoa per tirarsi su di morale...

Invece devo dire che questa interessante raccolta di aforismi, nasconde un'analisi profonda dell'animo umano, un affresco molto lucido della superficialità della comune esistenza umana.

Penso che sia un libro che sarebbe bene leggere per la grande quantità di spunti di riflessione che offre. Lo consiglio anche ai lettori/lettrici più giovani. Sconsigliato alle persone superficiali, anacolute ed ottuse. Ma del resto, questo tipo di gente non legge assolutamente nulla. Quindi non c'è problema...

I have to say that, considering my present weak health condition, this book could apparently be a non-optimal kind of reading. It's like suggesting to a depressed person to read Pessoa's "The Book of Disquiet" to lift his morale...

On the contrary, this interesting collection of aphorisms represents a deep analysis of the human soul, a very clear description of the shallowness of the common human existence.

I reccomend to read this book for the large number of occasions to reflect it offers. I suggest its reading also to young readers. Of course it's not good for superficial, ignorant and obtuse people. After all, this type of people do not read any kind of book, so, there's no problem...

J. E. Williams: "Stoner"

L'unico aspetto positivo del fatto di stare sempre male (come capita a me ultimamente) è che uno dei pochi sollievi da questa così negativa condizione derivi dalla lettura. Non c'è film che tenga: la TV non mi interessa. Solo la lettura e la musica riescono a darmi un po' di soddisfazione durante giornate altrimenti particolarmente deprimenti.

Ed ecco allora un bel racconto. L'opera più famosa dello scrittore americano John Williams: Stoner. Una storia che affascina per la sua semplicità. E' il racconto della vita di un uomo che di certo non brilla per delle gesta eclatanti: ma questa vita apparentemente comune viene declinata dall'autore in maniera tale da evidenziare quanto di speciale possa esistere nella vita apparentemente semplice della gente cosiddetta comune.

Una bella storia. Una lettura scorrevole. Consigliato a tutti i tipi di lettori (magari giovani).

The sole positive aspect when continously suffering health troubles (as in my personal case) is that one of the few relief in this so adverse condition comes from reading. Neither movies nor TV: only music and books can give me some pleasure during otherwise depressing days.

So, here it is a good novel. This is probably the most famous book by John Williams: Stoner. This a fashinating story about the life of a simple man. This simple life is perfectly described by the author evindencing how "special" the life of the so called common people can be. 

This is a good book. A good reading. I suggests it to all kind of readers (above all the young ones).

F. Nietzsche: "Umano Troppo Umano/Human, all too human"

Ops! Mi sono accorto che non ho mai discusso qui di un'opera di Nietzsche. E questo è grave. Cerco di rimediare subito. Ovviamente l'opera di Nietzsche fa parte integrante della mia personale biblioteca e consiglio a tutti di avere dei libri di questo filosofo. Però non basta possedere dei libri. Bisogna pure leggerli.

Naturalmente ci sono opere di Nietzsche molto complesse (basta pensare a Zaratustra): per questo motivo sorge il dubbio da dove cominciare per non farsi prendere dallo sconforto e magari rinunciare all'impresa.

Personalmente credo che "Umano troppo Umano" possa essere un libro tale da consentire un avvicinamento al pensiero di questo filosofo. Ripeto: si tratta sempre di un libro di filosofia sulla condizione umana (detto in parole poverissime). Tuttavia si legge piuttosto bene ed è motivo di profonda riflessione personale.

Una lettura certamente molto utile.

I've seen that I have never cited here a book of Nietzsche. I think that Nietzsche must be included in a decent private library. As it is not enough to buy some books but read them, the question is: from which book can I begin? Of course some books of Nietzsche are more complex than other (i.e. "Thus Spoke Zarathustra"). Thus it is important to start reading Nietzsche from something not too difficult.

In my opinion "Human, all too human" can be a good start. I evidence that this is a book of philosophy about the human conditions, but it is a very interesting book and occasion for personal reflections.

This is surely an useful reading.

Peter Cameron: "Coral Glynn"

Che dire di questo libro? Posso dire che questo romanzo parte con una storia molto interessante, con un'ambientazione molto "british", una narrazione affascinante ed intrigante. La storia comincia a prendere forma pagina dopo pagina interessando e coinvolgendo il lettore sulla vicenda di questa infermiera. Poi però a metà libro crolla tutto: la storia si spegne e quel poco che resta si banalizza e viene dall'autore frettolosamente chiuso.

Insomma una montagna che partorisce un topolino. Una bella occasione mancata, una bella storia sprecata. E pensare che da ogni parte si recensisce questo libro con lodi sperticate... Esagerati!

What should I say about this book? I can say that the story begins in a very interesting way, with a very British atmosphere, a very fashinating reading. Page after page, the story aquires its shape involving the reader in the Coral Glynn's fate. But, in the second half of the book, something goes wrong and everything collapses: the story dies and everything tends to become banal and trite. It seems to me that the author has lost the way and he decided to quickly put the story to an end. So very little results from a big initial idea. 

Today in Italy there are many positive comments about this book: I judge them too exaggerated...

Steinbeck J. "Uomini e topi/Of mice and men"

Visto che è arrivata l'estate, presento questo romanzo che si presta per una lettura sulla spiaggia sotto l'ombrellone (beato chi ci può andare...). Si tratta di un romanzo ultra-classico, una storia con una trama non troppo complicata, un libro non troppo lungo, avvincente quanto basta... Insomma una lettura a portata del cervello di chiunque, non eccessivamente impegnativa: un libro non troppo ingombrante e non costa nemmeno tanto. Insomma non ci sono scuse per metterlo in borsa e passare in modo costruttivo due orette sotto il caldone dell'estate.

Finally, summer has come. I thus introduce this book which in my opinion is a good reading while resting the bones on the beach. This is a classic work of the american literature, a not too complicated story, a not too long book, rather fashinating. The book is not too expansive to buy and little enough to be included in your bag. You have no excuses to catch it and read it passing a good time under the summer sun...  

Guènon R. "L'esoterismo di Dante/L'Esoterisme de Dante"

Ne ho letti parecchi di libri di Guenon e sono tutti molto interessanti. Anche questo libro non è da meno: affascinante il tema e le modalità con le quali esso viene esaminato. Per noi che siamo stati costretti a leggere Dante e la sua Divina Commedia al Liceo questo libro è una specie di rivelazione perchè getta una prospettiva "esoterica" ed iniziatica sulla figura di Dante e su tutta la sua opera, in particolare la Commedia. Forse a scuola avrebbero dovuto accennare a qualcosina di questa interessante prospettiva invece di farci subire questa opera immensa come un qualcosa di astruso e privo di senso. 

Consiglio la lettura ovviamente a chi possiede una infarinatura di cultura letteraria: inutile dire che questo libro mi ha invogliato a rileggere completamente la Commedia...

I have read many books written by R. Guenon and I have to say that they have interested me a lot. This book is extremely interesting as well: it's fascinating the issue discussed and the modalities through which this issue is analyzed. For those, like me, who were forced to study Dante's Commedia at school, this book is a sort of revelation because it provides a completely esoteric perspective about Dante, his entire production in particular about the Commedia. Maybe at school they could have taught us something about it instead of force us to study the Commedia without understanding anything at all...

I suggest the reading of this book to those readers having a culture about humanities: this book has also stimulated me to read again the Commedia...

Popper K. "Scienza e Filosofia/Science and Philosophy"

Questo libro di Popper non è particolarmente recente dato che raccoglie 5 saggi (1956-1967) pubblicati in Italia la prima volta nel 1969. Ritengo tuttavia che le analisi trattate da Popper in questo volume presentino ancora un interesse rilevante e un'attualità importante. Questi saggi appaiono scritti in una forma molto fluida e di lettura piuttosto agevole: in molti casi appaiono ancora molto illuminanti per comprendere il ruolo della scienza ed i suoi rapporti con la filosofia. 

Insomma consiglio la lettura anche ai giovani lettori non solo per la chiarezza del linguaggio, ma anche per l'interessante tematica che questa raccolta affronta.

This book of Karl Popper is probably rather old: it collects 5 essays on the relations between Science and Philosophy written between 1956 and 1967. This book is an italian edition and I'm not sure that it has been edited also in other countries. Anyway, I consider this book a very interesting work showing a relevant interest for the present implications of science development. The reading of these essays is rather plain and fluid still providing useful contributins in the understanding of the sensitive relations between Science and philosophy.

I suggest the reading of this book to all kind of readers: also young readers will find interesting topics written also in a very clear style.

Anonimo: "La nube della non conoscenza/The cloud of Unknowing"

Se c'è un libro decisamente particolare, beh allora è proprio questo. La "Nube" è una guida spirituale cristiana scritta da un anonimo inglese forse nel XIV secolo. Di per sè può apparire come una trattazione totalmente astratta e iperfilosofica che, per il profano, discute fondamentalmente sul nulla. Invece non è così. Chi dispone di un briciolo di conoscenza esoterica può trovare in questo libro una serie di stimoli molto interessanti anche se si riferiscono allo spiritualismo cristiano.

Insomma è un libro che può attirare molto di più di quanto possa apparire all'inizio. Ripeto: non è però un libro per tutti. Anzi, è veramente per quei pochi che possono capirlo.

This is "the particular book" by definition. The "Cloud" is a spiritual christian guide written by an anonymous english writer in the late XIV century. At a first superficial reading, it may appear to a profane as a pure thoeretical and abstract discussion about "nothing". It is not so. Who has a minimal knowledge about mysticism amd esotericism can here find many interesting and stimulating topics even if inspired by christian mysticism.

This book can be more fascinating than it can appear at a first sight. I repeat: this is not a reading good for all readers: it's out of the reach of the majority of the normal readers. But it's extremely interesting for who can understand it...
