Un libro di un certo interesse. Scritto alcuni anni fa, presenta tuttavia un carattere di attualità molto forte.

Questo per dire che alla fin fine siamo alla prese sempre con gli stessi problemi.

Un saggio in cui l'autore analizza il declino della cultura contemporanea o, se vogliamo, il processo di "fine della cultura" come valore. Si tratta di un'analisi molto critica e molto poco politicamente corretta in cui, senza peli sulla lingua, l'autore descrive l'impossibilità dell'esistenza di una contro-cultura in quanto tale, ma dello scontro fra la cultura, in senso ampio, e l'oblio ovvero l'assenza di cultura.

Il libro interessante rivolto quindi ad un lettore, dato l'agromento trattato, non del tutto anacoluto...

This book, in my opinion, stimulates a peculiar interest in the reader. It has been written several years ago, but the analysis presented is still valid. This is to say that we are dealing always with the same problems. Anyway, in this book the author analyzes the decline of culture in contemporary western societies and, maybe, the process of the "end of culture" itself. This is a very critical discussion and surely not "politically correct". Very clearly the author describes the clash between culture(s) and oblivion or the absence of culture(s).

This is therefore an interesting book directed to those readers who, considering the issues discussed, are not definitively ignorant...

Per un camminatore solitario come me, questo libro ha un valore direi quasi simbolico. Mi ha attratto subito la foto sulla copertina che ritrae l'autore a piedi su una strada di campagna: cosa che spesso faccio anche io.

Il libro in effetti è un diario delle riflessioni dell'autore durante il suo camminare nell'Inghilterra meridionale.

Un libro molto bello e dotato di un certo fascino. La prosa è molto riflessiva e lenta: diciamo che non è di sicuro un thriller.

Ritengo che sia un libro che sicuramente consiglio di leggere, ma a quei lettori "maturi" e non solo in senso anagrafico.

Being a solitary walker, this book detains a sort of symbolic value for me. For example, I've been attracted by the image in the cover in which the author is walking alone along a country road: I often do the same. This book is a sort of diary of the reflections of the author while walking in the country roads in souther England. A beautiful book surely having a peculiar appeal. The writing is very reflexive and slow like a slow walking... Surely this book cannot be described as a thriller...

I suggest the reading of this book, but I think it is more suitable to "mature" readers (not only in terms of age)

M. Pollan "In difesa del cibo/In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto

Ecco qui un altro libro molto istruttivo ed interessante di Pollan. Anche in questo caso il protagonista è il cibo, quello che mangiamo, quello che subiamo, quello che spesso ci viene imposto da modelli culturali e di marketing. In questo caso Pollan critica l'eccessivo peso della scienza nutrizionistica nelle scelte alimentari. Il nutrizionismo, con la suo visione riduzionistica tipica di un approccio scientifico, tende a sottovalutare le relazioni: non solo le relazioni fra i componenti di un alimento, ma anche le relazioni umane ed i significati culturali del mangiare.

Certamente si tratta di un libro rivolto principalmente al pubblico americano che appare privo di qualsiasi riferimento in materia. Considerando però la progressiva erosione dei modelli alimentari nostrani, in favore di un modo di mangiare "industriale", direi che questo libro può essere molto utile anche al lettore italico.

Penso poi che i giovani farebbero bene ad essere informati su questi temi prima che sia troppo tardi (occhio alla ciccia, al diabete e all'infarto)...

Here is another interesting and useful book by M. Pollan. Also in this case, the main subject is food, what we usually eat, what we often are almost forced to eat because imposed by marketing, commercial and industrial choices. In this book Mr Pollan discusses the excessive role the science of nutrition plays within individual food choices. The science of nutrition, with its remarkable reductionist approach and feature, tends to ignore or under-evaluate the concept of "relation". This concept of relation embraces not only the links among elements and factors at the base of any kind of food, but also human, cultural, interpersonal relations at the base of nutrition as cultural sphere.

Maybe this book is mainly directed to american readers who are likely to be more vulnerable to the risk and danger of trash food. Nonetheless, considering the continuing erosion in our traditional nutritional patterns, I believe that this book can be also useful to italian readers. In particular, I think that young readers should be more informed and aware about this sensitive topic.

M. Eliade: "Miti, Sogni, Misteri/Myths, Dreams and Mysteries"

Durante questo forzato periodo di fermo per malattia, ho letto anche questo libro di Eliade. Interessante come sempre: molto approfondito e stimolante. Ovviamente quando si parla di "misteri" non si tratta di trame da thriller o da libro giallo, ma di "mistero" in senso esoterico: questo a scanso di equivoci.

Attraverso una prospettiva antropologica, l'autore descrive ad esempio il simbolismo legato alla Terra Madre, ai "sogni da svegli" o il "calore magico". Il linguaggio è abbastanza divulgativo: quindi Eliade consente al lettore di avvicinarsi a questi temi senza particolari difficoltà.

Lettura interessante che consiglio a tutti i tipi di lettori/lettrici che possano avere interesse per questo genere di argomenti, ovvio.

During this forced period of stopping time due to health troubles, I have read also this book of M. Eliade. As usual, it's a very interesting and stimulating book. Of course when talking about "Mysteries", it's not a matter of crimes but rather "Mystery" in esoteric meaning and value: just to be clear...

Through an anthropological perspective, the author describes for example the symbolism linked to Mother Earth or to the "magical warmth". The description is rather clear and plain: for this reason Eliade drives the reader inside these topics without specific difficulties.

In conclusion, this is an interesting reading. I suggest this book to all kind of readers showing of course an interest about these kind of topics...

Fulcanelli: "Il Mistero delle Cattedrali/The Mistery of the Cathedrals"

Continuo la serie della descrizione dei libri di questo periodo di blocco forzato per malattia. E' ora il turno di questo particolare testo di Fulcanelli: un vero classico della letteratura ermetica. Chi non sapesse che è stato Fulcanelli, si faccia un tour in Internet per rendersi conto. Argomento troppo lungo e complesso per essere trattato in questa sede.

Il "Mistero delle Cattedrali" è un libro difficilissimo che descrive il significato ermetico della letteratura su pietra di alcune famose cattedrali francesi tra cui ovviamente Notre Dame a Parigi. Ovviamente questo è un livello quasi superficiale di lettura di questo libro poichè in pratica Fulcanelli descrive (si fa per dire data l'oscurità generale del libro) alcuni concetti chiave della trasmutazione e della scienza alchemica.

Data la mia limitatissima preparazione in materia, devo ammettere che forse ho compreso uno scarso 1% del contenuto di questo libro: certamente sono stato stimolato ad approfondire per farmi un'idea meno sfocata del mondo della scienza ermetica.

A guardarlo così, non si direbbe che questo libro sia una lettura ideale durante un periodo di malattia. invece non è così perchè è un libro bellissimo ed affascinante.

Inutile dire che la lettura di questo libro è inarrivabile per il lettore comune: un'opera fuori della portata di gran parte dei lettori. Per i pochi "eletti" però devo dire che...

I here continue the description of the books I have read during this period of health adversity. Now I'm introducing this book from Fulcanelli, a real masterpiece of the hermetic literature. For those ignoring who Fulcanelli was, I can only suggest to spend a little time finding some info in Internet. The description of Fulcanelli is a too complex issue to be discussed here.

The "Mistery of the Cathedrals" is an extremely difficult book where Fulcanelli described the hermetic meaning of the "stone literature" shown in some famous french cathedrals such as Notre Dame in Paris. Of course this is the most superficial aspect of the book because, moving from this architectural description, Fulcanelli enters the obscure dimension of some concepts and principles of the transmutation and alchemy.

Due to my estremely limited knowledge about this topic, I have to admit that I have understood maybe about 1% of this book. Nonetheless it has stimulated my intention to better know the world of hermetic science.

From these considerations, maybe one could state that such a book is not recommended when you are ill: on the contrary, it has been, in my opinion, a very fascinating reading.

It's quite useless to say that this book is completely out of the common reader's reach. Yet, for the other people...

Sacks O. "L'Occhio della Mente/The Mind's Eye"

Siccome in questo periodo ho avuto una mare di problemi di salute, sono rimasto bloccato a casa. Quindi gran parte del mio tempo l'ho dedicato alla lettura. Ho letto e sto leggendo molti libri di vario genere: comincio oggi quindi ad annoiare il casuale lettore di questo blog descrivendo ciò che ho letto.

Cominciamo da questo libro: l'ultima fatica di Sacks. Questo libro affronta la questione della vista e della visione da una prospettiva prettamente neurologica. Vengono riferiti, come sempre accade nei libri di Sacks, alcuni casi personali e soprattutto l'autore cita il suo stesso caso. Sacks infatti a causa di un tumore ha perso la visione nell'occhio destro e di questo fatto ne tratta le implicazioni e le conseguenze personali.

Devo dire che, pur affrontando un argomento certamente interessante, questo libro mi sembra forse fra i più deboli di Sacks. Probabilmente l'autore lo ha scritto sull'onda emotiva di questa esperienza: comunque mi sembra meno coinvolgente degli altri cho ho letto finora.

Questo non vuol dire che non sia un libro comunque di un certo interesse: ne consiglio infatti la lettura a tutti i tipi di lettore anche in considerazione della grandi capacità che Sacks detiene come divulgatore.

Being blocked at home due to particularly adverse health conditions, I have devoted a greater part of my time to reading. I have read and I'm still reading a large number of books related to different topics and genres. So I have decided to annoy the accidental reader of this blog describing what I have read.

I have decided to begin with this book: the most recent Sacks' work. This book is focused on "sight" and visual issues according to a neurological perspective. Like in the other books from Sacks, many real cases are described but above all the author describes his own experiences. He has lost his visual capacity in the right eye due to a cancer.

I've got to say that, in my opinion, this book is likely to be the weaker work I have read among the Sacks' books. Perhaps this results from the particularly sensitive emotional conditions the author has suffered while writing this book. Anyway, it seems to me less convincing...

Of course it doesn't mean that this book is not interesting: I suggest the reading of this book to all kind of readers just considering the usual divulgation ability of the author.

A. De Benoist "Comunità e Decrescita/Communiy and Degrowth"

Questa raccolta di articoli di De Benoist nasce sotto il cappello di un titolo molto accattivante, così come appare altrettanto accattivante il sottotitolo: "critica della ragione mercantilistica".

Non so perchè, ma leggendo attentamente De Benoist personalmente resto sempre un po' perplesso: in fondo mi pare che l'autore finisca con il rimasticare idee già note di altri pensatori senza aggiungere nulla di nuovo o di originale. Se uno legge prima Illic e poi De Benoist, tanto per fare un esempio, quest'ultimo appare decisamente fiacco. In questo libro si parla poco e confusamente di comunità e di decrescita: in particolare se qualcuno volesse capire per bene il concetto di decrescita si dovrebbe rivolgere ad esempio a Latouche perchè De Benoist mi sembra che faccia solo un blabla confuso.

Sono rimasto deluso? Ebbene sì. Il libro non è la fine del mondo pur trattando di argomenti molto attuali ed interessanti. Consiglio la lettura proprio se uno non avesse altro di meglio da leggere....

This collection of articles by A. De Benoist is organized under a very fascinating title as well as the subtitle. I don't know why but carefully reading the De Benoist's books I always remain rather perplexed. Finally it seems to me that the author re-uses well known concepts and ideas without adding any original contribution. For example if one reads Illic before reading De Benoist. the latter is likely to be rather weak. In my opinion in this book community and degrowth are not well discussed and deeply analyzed. When talking about degrowth maybe it's better to read the Latouche's works...

Am I disappointed? Maybe yes. This book is not surely the best masterpiece about these issues I have read in my life even if discussing very important topics. I may suggest the reading of this book just if you have nothing better to read....

F. Mc Court: "Le Ceneri di Angela/Angela's Ashes"

Ovviamente, dopo aver letto gli altri due famosi romanzi di Mc Court mi sono precipitato ad acquistare e leggere il primo libro della saga familiare dello scrittore. Quindi questo "Le Ceneri di Angela" di fatto è il libro da cui cominiciare l'intera lettura.

Detto questo, devo dire che mentre gli altri due racconti di Mc Court sono abbastanza "leggeri" e farciti di una certa dose di ironia, questo libro, che racconta l'infanzia dell'autore a Limerick in Irlanda, è di una drammaticità notevole. Pur essendo anche questo libro caratterizzato da una certa ironia, la cupa foschia di miseria e povertà che connota tutte le pagine di questa storia, alla fine prevale su tutto. Resta comunque una storia molto bella da leggere scritta con lo stile tipico di Mc Court: molto immediato e tagliente.

Consiglio sicuramente la lettura a tutti i tipi di lettore: anche i lettori e lettrici più giovani troveranno questo libro molto interessante e gradevole.

Rather obviously, after having read the two other books of F. Mc Court (see my other previous posts), I went to the bookshop and I have bought and immediately read the first part of the author's saga. For this reason this "Angela's Ashes" is the first chapter of the entire story from which the reading has to begin.

I've got to say that, while the two other books are definitively "light" and more ironic, this book, telling the author's childhood in Limerick - Ireland, is extremely more dramatic and this constant feeling of drama, made of deep poverty and deprivation, prevails over any other theme. This is however a very good book with a beautiful story to read written with the ususal Mc Court's style.

I thus suggest the reading of this book to all kind of readers. surely also younger readers will find this book extremely interesting and beautiful.

F. McCourt: "Ehi, Prof!/Teacher Man"

Dopo aver letto "Che Paese l'America" ho comprato e letto con grande piacere questo libro di Frank McCourt. Pur avendo una verve leggermente minore rispetto al precedente, anche questo libro è connotato dalla grande ironia dell'autore e dalla sua prosa semplice e schietta: tutto molto "Irish". Le vicessitudini di McCourt come insegnante nel sistema scolastico e nelle scuole di New York (con tanti momenti di riflessione anche relativi alla scuola italiana) rappresentano la continuazione naturale di "Che Paese l'America". Insomma prima leggere "Che Paese l'America", poi "Ehi, Prof!".

Libro gradevole e di agevole lettura. Consigliato a tutti i tipi di lettori soprattutto i giovani.

After having read "'Tis", I've bought and read with great pleasure this book of Frank McCourt. Even if this book maybe shows less strength compared to "'Tis", "Teacher Man" is however characterized by the same irony and plain and direct writing: the result is very "Irish" as usual. The ups and downs of the author as teacher in the schools in New York and the american education system (with many similarities with the condition of the Italian education system) represent the natural sequel of "'Tis". Therefore before reading "Teacher Man", it's better to read "'Tis".

This is a good book, a pleasant reading. I suggest its reading to all kind of readers above all young readers.

Un altro importante ed interessante libro di Mircea Eliade. Con un linguaggio semplice e diretto, l'autore descrive le radici del simbolismo religioso soprattutto di tipo tradizionale. Un libro da leggere e rileggere per comprendere il linguaggio simbolico tradizionale ormai quasi del tutto perduto ed incomprensibile all'umanità "ordinaria".

Un gran bel libro, molto piacevole da leggere. Un racconto autobiografico molto ironico sulle avventure dell'autore al suo arrivo a New York dall'Irlanda alla fine degli anni '40.

McCourt dimostra tutta la sua abilità come scrittore e "descrittore" di sè stesso e della realtà che lo circonda con una schiettezza, immediatezza e semplicità che alla fine trasportano il lettore direttamente nelle strade di Brooklyn e Manhattan. Si sorride spesso sulle tipicità dei tanti gruppi nazionali che compongono il mondo di New York: gli americani, gli irlandesi, gli italiani, i portoricani, le signore svedesi...

Lettura accessibile a tutti: altamente consigliato a giovani lettori e lettrici. Ottima idea regalo...

A beautiful book, a pleasant reading. An autobiographical ironic story with the author's adventures from his arrival in New York from Ireland at the end of the '40s. Frank McCourt shows his great ability as writer in describing his own character and weakness and the reality around him with immediacy and simplicity. At the end the reader can find himself directly immersed and plunged into the Brooklyn and Manhattan streets. One often smiles about the typical characters of the various national groups composing the New Yors world: the americans, irish, italians, puertoricans, two swedish women...

A good book for all kind of readers: I suggest the reading above all to young readers.

Mi è molto piaciuto questo libro, scritto con grande semplicità ed immediatezza. Raccoglie i ricordi dell'autore sulla sua famiglia, i suoi genitori, la loro piccola filosofia di vita. Ne emerge un piccolo acquarello di quotidianità semplice di una "famiglia come tante altre" o per lo meno che si sforza di essere come tutte le altre.

Una storia piccola piccola che però attira il lettore. Consiglio la lettura a tutti i tipi di lettori e lettrici, magari quelli più giovani.

Il tema trattato da questo libro è molto importante ed interessante. Soprattutto se si considera che viviamo in società che in questi ultimi decenni si fondano sulla negazione di ogni identità (reale e sostanziale) e senso della comunità. Individualismo sfrenato e trasformazione delle persone in meri consumatori connotano la nostra società e i nostri rapporti quotidiani.

Il libro tuttavia è zeppo di citazioni, elucubrazioni filosofiche: molta, troppa teoria e poca sostanza. Una buona tesi di laurea, ma pochi apporti pratici per la realizzazione di un progetto politico (anche personale). Credo che l'autore abbia scritto libri migliori. Comunque chi fosse interessato alla parte più squisitamente teorica e filosofica dell'argomento troverà questo libro di una certa qual utilità. Che fatica e che noia però!

The issue discussed in this book is particularly relevant and interesting also considering that we live in societies that in these last decades are essentially based on the negation of any idea of community and identity. We are only individuals and mere consumers in our everyday relations.

This book is however full of citations and philosophical theories: it's thus a book very, too, theoretical. Maybe it's a good academic work, but it provides very few practical ideas useful for any political personal project. I think that the author has written better books.

However the reader looking for philosophical theories about the concept of identity and community will surely find this book inrteresting. (but it's a little bit boring...)

Per la serie "I Libri dell'Estate" consiglio di leggere questo libro. I libri dell'estate infatti non devono essere di grosse dimensioni (impicciano) e possibilmente non essere troppo impegnativi.

Credo che questo libro risponda a questi canoni: non è lunghissimo ed è una lettura decisamente rilassante e piacevole. Non ne racconto la trama, ovviamente, ma già l'ambientazione (il grande Nord) invita alla calma ed al relax. La storia che racconta è comunque molto interessante e coinvolgente.

Destinato a tutti i tipi di lettori.

I include this book in the series "summer reading". The summer reading books must be not too long (in order to reduce their dimensions and make easy their placement in your suitcase) and, when possible, not too difficult to read.

I think that this book satisfies these requirements: it's not too long and it is a pleasant reading. I don't want to describe the story, but the site where the story takes place (in the north of Norway) stimulates relax and calm. The story is interesting and pleasant.

R. Guenon: "La Grande Triade/The Great Triad"

Anche questo libro, come le altre opere di René Guenon, si presenta come un lavoro fondamentale per l'approfondimento di alcuni aspetti della cultura e dei saperi tradizionali. Partendo dalla chiarificazione del significato della Grande Triade della cultura tradizionale cinese, l'autore analizza altre simili triadi presenti in altre culture tradizionali evidenziandone le similitudini e facendo i doverosi distinguo.

Libro complesso che ondeggia fra l'ermetismo e la dimensione alchemica.

Una lettura comunque illuminante che svela e chiarisce interessantissimi temi oggi del tutto ignoti ed ignorati dalla cultura coontemporanea, ma che per millenni hanno ispirato e guidato la vita degli uomini e delle donne.

Per pochi illuminati lettori.

This book, as in the case of other works by R. Guenon, has to be considered as an important tool for understanding some topics of traditional cultures and knowledge. Starting for a clarification of the concept of Great Triad in the traditional Chinese culture, the author analyzes other similar triads in other cultures highlighting similarities and differences.

This si a complex book moving from hermetism to alchemy.

It's however a very interesting and useful reading clarifying many issues at present completely ignored by the contemporary culture.

I suggest the reading of this book just to few skilled readers.

M. Eliade: "Il Sacro ed il Profano/The Sacred and The Profane"

Come tutte le opere di M. Eliade, anche questo libro è una trattazione molto interessante ed approfondita di elementi essenziali delle religioni tradizionali. Anche se l'autore premette sin da subito che si tratta di un lavoro che non intende entrare in troppi dettagli ed argomenti specifici, questo libro rimane tuttavia un importante strumento di riflessione non solo sulla profondità della religiosità tradizionale, ma anche, e soprattutto, sulla superficialità ed aridità della società contemporanea.

Questo libro, pur affrontando un tema molto complesso, presenta tuttavia una narrazione chiare e nitida, di agevole comprensione: certamente bisogna avere una minima dimestichezza con questi argomenti, ma non è necessario essere degli specialisti di storia delle religioni per apprezzare questa opera.

Consiglio certamente la lettura di questo libro: per molti, ma non per tutti.

Like other books of M. Eliade, this work is a very interesting and detailed analysis about many essential elements of traditional religions. Even if the author in the premise declares that this is a quite simple and brief discussion about these issues, this book remains an important tool in the comprehension and understanding not only of the role and perspective of traditional religions but also about the superficial and sterile characteristcs of the contemporary society and culture.

This book, even analyzing a very complex issue, nonetheless shows a clear narrative: surely the reader needs minimal skills about these topics, but it is not necessary to be a professor of history of religions to appreciate this book.

I suggest the reading of this book: it's good for a wide spectrum of readers but not too large...

Che bel romanzo. Molto piacevole da leggere. Una storia bellissima. Il racconto della vita di Barney Panofsky e delle sue peripezie: i suoi tre matrimoni, la sua vita fatta di bevute e sigari, il sospetto dell'omicidio dell'amico Boogie.

Ovviamente non racconto la trama, ma resta un libro molto bello da leggere da cui è stato anche tratto un arcinoto film.

Difficile aggiungere altro. Consiglio la lettura a tutti. Stop. Che altro dire? Leggetelo...

Un libro terribilmente drammatico, dalla prosa secca ed affilata come un rasoio. Una testimonianza di una crudezza asperrima sulle drammatiche condizioni di vita (diciamo così) nei gulag ai tempi delle purghe staliniane.

Salamov racconta storie indicibili: un libro che ti trascina via con sè nel gelo dei gulag sperduti nel nulla...

Un libro da leggere sicuramente: è quasi offensivo definirlo "bello" per la drammaticità della narrazione. Non è certo un libro di svago, una lettura leggera.

A story with an acute violence about the terrible conditions inside the russian gulags during the Stalin times. Salamov tells the indicible: this book takes the readers with him in the freezing cold (also in human terms) of these places lost in the nowhere land.

This is a book to read: it is almost offensive define it " a beautiful book" because of the dramatic story it tells. Surely it's not an entertainment or a "soft" reading...

I suggest th reading of this book to all kind of readers above all the young readers because they have to understand, they have to know...

In questo libro è raccolta una serie di scritti ed articoli di G. Bateson che spaziano lungo un arco di tempo piuttosto lungo. Gli argomenti trattati sono di varia natura, sono intrecciati e toccano diverse sfere di riflessione. Questo intreccio multidisciplinare è forse l'aspetto più interessante di questo libro in cui appunto antropologia, psicologia, psichiatria, neurologia, sociologia, ecologia, sembrano quasi delineare una disciplina del tutto nuova ed originale.

Inutile dire quindi che, nonostante la prosa comunque sempre molto chiara, si tratta di un libro diretto ad un pubblico in possesso di strumenti analitici tali da permettterne una comprensione piena ed un apprezzamento completo del messaggio di Bateson. Certo: non bisogna essere degli specialisti, ma una certa preparazione è richiesta.

Il libro, oltre che interessante, può apparire anche utile per spiegare ed interpretare molti fenomeni e meccanismi sociali ed individuali: io stesso ho riscontrato alcuni spunti di un certo interesse per la mia attività professionale.

Libro certamente da consigliare con le precauzioni citate sopra.

This book collects a number of papers and articles written by G. Bateson during a rather long time course. The issues discussed show different nature, are quite interrelated and encompass different reflection spheres. This multidisciplinary interrelation probably is the most interesting aspect of this book where anthropology, sociology, psychology and ecology are likely to determine a completely original and new discipline.

Even if the writing is quite simple and always rather clear, this book is directed to a public however "skilled", having those analytical tools useful for a complete understanding of the Bateson's message. Of course, it is not necessary to be an expert, but an adequate preparation is desiderable.

This book is thus interesting and it contains also many useful contributions to explain many phenomena and mechanisms of the dynamics of the contemporary society at societal and individual level: I have found many interesting considerations useful also in my work activity.

I therefore suggest the reading of this book with the above mentioned precautions.

R. Mabey: "Natura come cura/Nature Cure"

Ho acquistato questo libro, come in altri casi, attirato dal titolo, sottotitolo e dalla IV di copertina. Titolo accattivante, un argomento di grande interesse: possibilità di ricorrere ad un maggiore contatto con la natura ed i suoi cicli per vincere la depressione ed in generale per vivere decisamente meglio.

Poi il libro l'ho letto. Che dire? L'idea di per sè sarebbe buona: è un racconto di come l'autore sia riuscito a vincere (mica ne sono tanto sicuro però) la sua personale guerra contro la depressione grazie alla riscoperta della bellezza della natura, alla vita in campagna circondato da fiori, alberi, animali, insetti ecc...

Qualche spunto interessante ci sarebbe pure: però il libro nel suo complesso è molto, molto fiacco. Capisco che l'autore è un famoso botanico, appassionatissimo di fiori e piante: ma questo non vuole dire che mi devi ammorbare sui dettagli dell'ennesimo fiore selvatico che cresce nell'East Anglia o sui ghirigori del volo di un rondone.

Dopo tutte queste divagazioni, alla fine il nodo di tutto il discorso finisce in secondo piano: accidenti si parla tanto dell'importanza del recupero di un rapporto rinnovato con la natura per curare il corpo e lo spirito e Mabey non ne parla mai. Cita solo di sfuggita qualche episodio della sua esperienza, ma molto superficialmente e brevemente. Peccato.

Non possiamo nemmeno dire con certezza, dopo aver letto il libro: hey funziona! E poi viene anche da pensare: quanto bisogna essere facoltosi per permettersi uno stile di vita del genere? E chi i soldi non ce li ha, si arrangia con il terrazzo di casa?

Insomma, l'ennessima occasione mancata...

I have decided to buy this book because attracted by the title, subtitled and backcover. Good title and interesting issue: the possibility to deal with depression thanks to a more direct contact with Nature and her cycles.

After that, I have read this book. What can I say? The underlying idea is surely good and interesting: it's the story about the way through which the author won his depression thanks to the re-discovery of Nature, life in the countryside surrounded by flowers, trees, plants and animals.

Some interesting idea is however somewhere distributed throughout the book, but the book is in general rather weak. The autor is a famous botanist and plant-flower expert but a too long digression about the nth wild flower or about the flight of a swallow could be a little bit boring.

After these digressions, at the end the essential core of the discussion is likely to be eclipsed: the possibility to cure mind and body and to achieve a better quality of life with better contacts with nature is at the core of a wide scientific debate but the authors never enter into the topic. He just briefly cites some aspects fo his personal experience but very superficially...

In bief, this is another example of a missed opportunity to write a good book...

R. Calasso "L'ardore"

Un libro decisamente importante ed interessante. L'autore conferma ed approfondisce (sia pure su una direttrice diversa) il filone già affrontato nelle "Nozze di Cadmo ed Armonia". Si tratta di approfondimenti sulla religiosità antica che vanno ben oltre la mera prospettiva antropologica.

In questo libro l'oggetto di riflessione è il ritualismo e la religiosità vedica con tutta la complessità ed articolazione che una simile spiritualità impone. Libro profondo ed approfondito, un'analisi importante e decisamente interessante. Molto bello è l'ultimo capitolo sul ruolo ed importanza dei riti e del simbolismo religioso nella società contemporanea.

Un libro complesso che richiede competenza e passione su un simile argomento. Certamente una lettura non per tutti soprattutto in questi anni di ignoranza e stupidità sconcertanti.

A very important and interesting reading. The author confirms and analizes (even if in a definitively different perspective), the discussion already made in the "Marriage".

This book is focused on the analisys of ancient religious rites and spirituality well beyond the mere anthropological perspective. In this book the central bias is the religion within the Ancient Veda culture and heritage with the complexity and articulation required in auch an analysis.

It's a in-depth and complex book, a very interesting and detailed discussion. In my opinion the last chapter is likely to be particularly interesting being about the role and meaning of rites and spirituality in contemporary societies.

It's thus a complex book requiring adequate expertize and interest on this issue. Surely it's not a book for all kind of readers also considering the widespread ignorance and stupidity of these sad times.

P.S. Actually I don't know if a translation from italian into foreign laguages is already available. I'll take the necessary information and I will update this post as soon as possible.

Hasek J. "Il buon soldato Sc'vèik/The Good Soldier Švejk"

Questo libro è un classico della letteratura centro-europea del XX secolo. L'autore, con grande ironia, riesce a mettere in scena lo psico-dramma dell'Europa durante la I Guerra Mondiale. Alla fine è l'intera società europea al tramonto che viene aspramente criticata e derisa da Hasek.

Un libro di facile lettura e molto interessante, un bel romanzo: alla fine il buon soldato Sc'vèik, con la sua apparente ingenuità e stupidità, diventa una maschera, un simbolo di un certo tipo di umanità.

Consiglio la lettura di questo libro a tutti soprattutto ai giovani lettori.

This book is a classic work in the central european literature in XX century. The author, with great irony, organizes a real psycho-drama of Europe during the I world war. Finally the entire european society in its decline is definitively criticized by Hasek.

This book is very interesting and with an easy reading: at the end the good soldier Sc'vèik, so naive in his only apparent stupidity, becomes a sort of "mask", a symbol of a certain kind of human being.

I suggest the reading to all readers: above all young ones.

R.M. Rilke: "Elegie Duinesi/Duino Elegies"

In una biblioteca casalinga che si rispetti è indispensabile predisporre una bella sezione di poesia. All'interno di questa sezione non può di certo mancare questa opera: si tratta infatti di un testo poetico fondamentale.

La poesia di Rilke è semplicemente splendida e non necessita di ulteriori spiegazioni. Rilke si legge e basta.

Da leggere e rileggere.

Secondo me l'opera più bella di Gogol. Ho letto questo libro tanti anni fa: acciderba, pensandoci bene, dovrei rileggerlo.

La storia di questo super classico della letteratura russa e mondiale è molto interessante (ovviamente taccio per non rovinare la sopresa). Mi colpì allora la prosa di Gogol: sottile ed arguta, ricamata e piena di deliziosi dettagli. Un vero piacere leggere questo libro.

Consiglio caldamente la lettura di questo libro a tutti i tipi di lettori: un libro che non può mancare in una biblioteca casalinga decente. Lo consiglio poi ai lettori/lettrici più giovani. Vi garantisco che non è un mattone: gradevolissimo ed un vero gioiello della letteratura.

In my opinion, this is the real Gogol's masterpiece. I've read it many years ago: I should read it again. The story described of this masterpeice of the russian and world literature is very fascinating and interesting: of course I don't say anything about it to avoid a "surprise failure"...

At that time I remained impressed mainly by the Gogol's style: so many details, beautiful descriptions, a sharp writing style... It's a real pleasure the reading of this book.

I thus suggest its reading to all kind of readers: it cannot lack in a decent home library. I warmly suggest its reading above all to young readers. Believe me: it's not boring, it's fascinating, a real literature masterpiece.

Innanzitutto devo premettere che non sono sicuro che la versione italiana "Lo Spirito Toyota" sia la traduzione del testo originale "Toyota Production System". Questo libro infatti l'ho letto alcuni anni fa e al momento, non avendolo sottomano, non posso verificare quale sia esattamente la versione inglese. Verificherò ed eventualmente apporrò le necessarie modifiche.

Detto questo veniamo al libro. Si tratta di un libro di management piuttosto datato ma che comunque rimane interessante da leggere soprattutto per comprendere come la Toyota abbia potuto raggiungere i risultati che ha ottenuto in questi ultimi anni. L'autore nfatti è colui che ha introdotto la qualità totale in Toyota: quindi sa perfettamente di cosa si parla.

Ritengo utile la lettura di questo libro anche per chi non si interessa nè di managemente nè tantomeno di automobili perchè quello che conta è la descrizione dei principi e dei valori che sono alla base di un sistema di lavoro e di organizzazione. Insomma si tratta di principi che possono essere applicati a qualsiasi realtà: infatti alla fin fine l'autore descrive un "metodo", uno "spirito" che può essere esteso ad altri contesti lavorativi ed ad altre forme organizzative.

Consiglio quindi la lettura a tutti anche perchè il libro è scritto in una forma molto semplice e divulgativa: sono convinto che anche i giovani possano trovare giovamento dalla lettura di questo libro. Ci sono infatti molti spunti, molte idee, molti suggerimenti...

First of all I have to say that I'm not so sure that the italian version of this book in my possession is the english translation of the book I have cited in the title. While I'm writing I've not here this book with me: so I can't confirm it. I'll check it soon and I will provide the eventual necessary corrections.

That said, I would like to highlight that this is a rather outdated management book, but in my opinion its reading could be useful also to understand how Toyota has achieved its famous production targets in these last decades. The author is the manager who introduced the Total Quality Management system within Toyota: so he knew very well this peculiar issue.

However I consider this book an useful reading also for those not immediately involved neither in car production nor management in general because the essential core of this book is composed of values, methods and principles which can be adopted in many different contexts. The author finally describes a method, a spirit: in addition this book is written in a very plain way.

I thus suggest its reading also to young readers because it contains many ideas and suggestions.

J. Joyce: "Gente di Dublino/Dubliners"

Come tutti gli appassionati di lettura, anche io, con una discreta dose di buona volontà, mi sono messo a leggere l'Ulisse di Joyce e.... non mi è piaciuto. Ma proprio per niente. Forse non ho capito bene l'essenza di quest'opera, forse non le ho dedicato sufficiente attenzione, forse sono un ritardato di mente, forse non capisco niente di letteratura; però, però, però, l'Ulisse non mi è piaciuto. Non ci posso fare niente. Dovrò rileggerlo 'sto libro e poi vedremo se miglioro.

Diverso il discorso per questo libro, "Gente di Dublino", una raccolta di 15 racconti dove emerge un interessante spaccato di umanità con le sue passioni e le sue debolezze. Sono 15 ritratti bellissimi e gradevolissimi. Insomma un libro da leggere anche se non si è dei "geni" della letteratura.

Consiglio quindi la lettura a tutti, soprattutto ai giovani lettori.

As any other books' enthusiast, I have read, with a discrete dose of goodwill, the J. Joyce "Ulysses" but, actually, I didn't like it. Maybe I have missed the central point of this work, maybe I have payed scarce attention to this book, maybe I'm not so good in literature, maybe, maybe... Anyway, I didn't like it. One of these day I have to read it again to see if I can improve my understanding... One of these days...

The "Dubliners" is completely different: it collects 15 tales where a very interesting description of a certain kind of humanity clearly emerges with its passions, weakness, sins, fears, etc. These are 15 beautiful portaits...

In brief a book to read even if you are not an expert of literature.

For this reason I suggest the reading of this book above all to young readers.

K. Kraus: Gli ultimi giorni dell'umanità/The Last Days of Mankind

Una grande opera teatrale la cui protagonista è totalmente la I guerra mondiale. E' un dramma di dimensioni ciclopiche anche perchè descrive l'estinzione di un mondo e di un'epoca. L'epoca contemporanea si fa largo con violenza lungo le pagine di questo libro.

Un libro molto difficile. Primo perchè è un'opera teatrale. Secondo: si parla di un mondo ormai totalmente dimenticato dai più. Terzo: si parla di questo dramma in modo sottilmente grottesco. E' veramente la descrizione della fine del mondo, in particolare di un certo mondo. Molto bello il saggio di Roberto Calasso.

Nalini M. Nadkarni "Tra la Terra ed il Cielo/Between Earth and Sky"

Il bel titolo di questo libro e soprattutto il suo sottotitolo ("La vita nascosta degli alberi") mi avevano fatto propendere per l'acquisto in libreria. Anche una rapida scorsa all'indice e una lettura fugace mi avevano abbastanza convinto. Purtroppo, ad una lettura più attenta, è risultato un libro un po' superficiale. Devo dire però che su questo argomento (intendo dire il mondo degli alberi) avevo tempo addietro letto la famosa "Mitologia degli alberi" di Brosse (libro che trovate commentato su questo blog) che rimane un'opera decisamente di livello superiore.

Nel libro si trova un po' di tutto quello che può interessare gli alberi: caratteristiche, simbologia (molto vaga), uso del legno. Ci sono molte poesie e ricordi personali (che però non sono particolarmente interessanti)

Forse chi non ha letto la "Mitologia degli alberi" potrà apprezzarlo meglio: io, ripeto, lo trovo superficiale. Comunque una lettura che può essere in qualche modo istruttiva per i giovani lettori.

The beautiful title of this book (and his subtitle) has convinced me to buy this book. I have also read the index and after having read some paragraph I was definitively convinced. Unfortunately, after reading this book, I have found it rather superficial. I've got to say that about trees and their world I have read the famous "Mythologie des arbres" by Brosse (I have described in this blog) which is definitively at a very higher level.

Anyway in this "Between Earth adn Sky" one can find an overview about wood and trees: their characteristics, the use of wood, their symbolic value (extremely vague...), the relations between people and trees, and so on. Along the pages there are many poems and personal memories (actually not so interesting...)

Maybe, who has not read the Brosse's book may find this book interesting: I repeat, in my opinion it is superficial. However this is a potential useful reading for young readers.

Pollan M. "Il dilemma dell'Onnivoro/The Omnivore's Dilemma"

Libro interessante e di grande attualità. Michael Pollan si chiede: cosa cavolo sto magiando? Dopo aver meditato sul delirante sistema alimentare americano (che ahimè ha contagiato tutte le agricolture dei Paesi che ironicamente si autodefiniscono "economie avanzate"), decide di darsi qualche risposta ricostruendo il persorso del cibo dal campo o dalla stalla al piatto.

Il risultato è particolarmente sconcertante: anche se connotato da un tono sempre ironico, l'autore delinea una denunica nitida dell'assurdità del nostro rapporto malato con il cibo.

Insomma un libro da leggere per costruire una consapevolezza sul nostro rapporto con ciò che mangiamo: da questo punto di vista può essere molto utile soprattutto per i giovani che sono le vittime principali del sistema "junk-food". La lettura è agevole e piacevole: da leggere...

This is a very interesting book. The author begins his reflections from a simple question: what am I eating? After some considerations about the irrational american food system (which actually must be extended to the agriculture in many western countries), the author tries to provide some answers to this question trying to reconstruct the history and the path of our everyday food from the field to the dish.

The result is quite astonishing: even if characterized by an ironc tone, this book is a clear report about the absurdity of our insane relation with food.

In brief, this is an useful book: it must be read also to reconstruct an awareness about the relations with what we everyday eat. This is thus an useful book about all for young readers who usually are the main victims of junk food.

Christmas Suggestions

Just few days remaining before Christmas and the usual gift-nightmare has arrived. We are full of no-use objects. Our houses are crammed with things with which we don't know what to do. Christmas is thus the day in which you probably will receive the umpteenth useless gift.

For this reason, I exploit this terrible and very boring blog just to give a small suggestion: please give books as gifts for Christmas. Any kind of book is OK. Even if I can stand them, well you can give also cooking, cuisine or receipes' books. Photo books or an atlas are OK as well. There are so many beautiful editions with fantastic bindings which can make a wonderful impression in any private library.

I'm perfectly aware that nobody is reading this blog: anyway, dear reader, who just for a technical error is fallen in this stupid dissertation, you have to know that even here, in this boring blog, you may find some suggestion and a good book as a gift. There are enough books of any sort.

Similarly, I'm perfectly aware that there's nothing more difficult than the description of the face of who, deeply ignorant for deliberate choice-birth-faith, has just received a book as a gift when rather expecting a last generation mobile phone or any kind of technological gadget. How to say? It's a mix of hate and perplexity: maybe if you give him a pile of shit, he'd be happier...
Maybe, that book will be thrown away, used to light the fire in the chimney or as a wedge for a table. But it colud happen that someone, in that house, as hit by a sudden raptus, decides to take it, open it and, why not, also read it.

In this way sometime, as written in many books, an incredible adventure may begin...

Suggerimenti Natalizi

E' arrivato il Natale ed inizia il solito incubo dei regali. Siamo pieni e strapieni di cose inutili. Le nostre case (chi più o chi meno) traboccano di oggetti di cui il più delle volte non sappiamo che farcene. Il Natale diventa quindi il momento in cui tra capo e collo è quasi certo che ti arriverà l'ennesimo oggetto inutile.

Per questa ragione approfitto di questo scalcinato e tediosissimo blog per fare un piccolo invito: regalate dei libri. Qualsiasi tipo di libro va bene. Anche se non li sopporto e non li ho mai capiti, regalate anche dei libri di cucina. Libri di fotografie o atlanti: vanno bene lo stesso. Ci sono edizioni bellissime con delle splendide rilegature che fanno fare una discreta figura a qualsiasi libreria domestica: anche di chi i libri non li hai mai letti se non obtorto collo sui banchi di scuola.

So perfettamente che nessuno segue questo blog: tuttavia, caro lettore casuale che per mero errore informatico sei incappato in questa dissertazione, sappi che anche qui puoi trovare qualche suggerimento per fare un bel regalo. Di titoli ce ne sono abbastanza, di tanti generi diversi.

Allo stesso modo so perfettamente che non c'è niente di più difficile da esprimere a parole dell'espressione facciale di chi, anacoluto per nascita-scelta-fede, riceve in dono un libro quando si aspettava un telefonino o un altro gadget tecnologico. Si tratta di un misto di odio profondo e sconcerto: se gli metteste in mano un pezzo di merda sarebbero più contenti. Eppure, continuo a dire: regalate dei libri. Magari li mettono da parte, sotto la "zampa" del tavolino (come si diceva un tempo), qualcuno ci accende il camino; però potrebbe capitare che qualcuno in casa, come colto da un improvviso raptus o conversione magico-misterica degna di un paolo di tarso sulla via di Damasco, si degni di prenderlo in mano, sfogliarlo e magari leggerlo.

E così che talvolta, come è scritto del resto in tanti libri, che può iniziare una grande avventura...

Lewis R. "Il più grande uomo scimmia del Pleistocene/The Evolution Man

Un libro cult di alcuni decenni fa. L'ho letto perchè è spesso citato come modello di humor intelligente. A me è sembrato un po' datato e francamente un po' stupidino. Comunque è una lettura leggera, anzi, leggerissima che non fa male: direi che è un libro innocuo. A me non ha fatto ridere per niente comunque non è malaccio...

Si tratta delle vicende grottesche (è proprio il caso di dirlo) di una tribù di uomini primitivi cui l'autore mette in bocca (cosa che andava tanto di moda negli anni '60...) un frasario scientifico filosofico molto accademico. Il tutto appare molto intelligente...

Insomma si tratta di un libro che consiglio soprattutto ai ragazzi e alle ragazze o a chi non si vuole impegnare più di tanto nella lettura del classico "mattone": per tutti gli altri tipi di lettore, direi che si tratta di un discreto diversivo. Può essere una buona idea regalo per il Natale (salvo che l'anacoluto di turno non ve lo tiri dietro...)

Some decades ago, this book was considered a sort of cult-opera. I have read it for this reason: it is cited often as an example of intelligent humor. In my opinion it is rather out of date and sometimes silly. Anyway, it is a "soft reading": it is an inoffensive book. Actually it has been quite difficult for me to smile while reading the adventures of a clan of primitive men: but I have to admit it's not so bad...

I suggest the reading of this book above all to young readers or to who wants to read a not-so-difficult book. For more exigent readers, this is a distraction reading.

By the way, it could be a good gift for Christmas (unless the usual anacoluthon won't throw it back to you...)

Questo interessante saggio affronta un tema molto particolare e piuttosto specifico. Non affronta infatti un generico "viaggiare" nel medioevo, ma le modalità con le quali avveniva il particolare rapporto di ospitalità. Vengono analizzate le varie peculiarità nazionali e le varie forme: taverne, ostelli, ospitalità gratuita, ospitalità riservata ai potenti, mescite di vino e birre, mercati, conventi, ecc...

Insomma si tratta di un saggio "storico" abbastanza tecnico e, in alcuni momenti, capace di richiedere un certo impegno. Di certo non è un libro affascinante di per sè: tuttavia è una lettura che può risultare molto utile. C'è molto, anzi moltissimo, che si potrebbe riscoprire nelle tecniche e modalità di ospitalità medievali: questo anche per chi intendesse, perchè no, intraprendere un'attività turistica di piccola scala legata a forme di ospitalità medievale. Con tutti i borghi e paesi in Italia che mantengono ancora una forte impronta medievale, ci sarebbe da sbizzarrirsi.

E poi emerge il diverso significato fra turismo e viaggio: il viaggiatore non è un turista. Bisognerebbe, anche in questo caso, riscoprire il valore ed il sapore del viaggio e la diversa etica e concezione di ospitalità ad esso legato. Anche per questo aspetto, questo libro merita la lettura.

This very interesting book analyzes a rather specific and particular issue. It is devoted in fact to the different modalities connotating the relationship of "hospitality". Examining the various national differences, the author describes the characteristics of tabernae, inns, hostels, pilgrims' hospitals and so on in the Middle Age. This is a history essay which in some parts may require some effort in the reading. Probably, to many readers, this book may appear not so fascinating per sè: nonetheless its reading may become very useful. In my opinion, in this book there is so much to learn to rediscover many expressions of medieval hospitality. It could be useful for example to whom decides to be engaged in some small scale entrapreneurial activity linked to tourism. There are so many villages in Italy still showing their medieval heritage where to do this. In addition this book highlights the great difference between tourism and travelling: it could be useful to rediscover the taste and the value of travelling and the different ethics connected to it. Also for this reason, I may suggest the reading of this interesting book. PS: I have found only the italian and german version of this book. I don't know actually if an english version exists. Any indication is thus welcome.

Si tratta di un libro decisamente molto bello, ma piuttosto difficile da leggere. Di certo non ci troviamo di fronte ad un romanzo con una trama da seguire: i protagonisti sono gli Dei, le Dee e gli eroi che si muovo dentro il mito ed il suo specifico linguaggio.

Insomma questo è un saggio che raccoglie molto "sapere tradizionale" che si snoda in una melodia che appartiene al dominio della poesia. E' un libro da leggere, ma ci vuole preparazione e predisposizione. Astenersi incapaci, impreparati e perditempo.

Questo libro è stato molto osannato dalla critica. E' stato considerato una sorta di grande opera in stile Thomas Mann.

Il focus del libro è la storia di vite personali e famigliari che si snodano sullo sfondo di una Dresda degli anni della Repubblica Democratica Tedesca, con le sue contraddizioni ed i suoi problemi della vita quotidiana. La storia si allunga fino al 1989 quando la RDT imboccò la via della riunificazione con la Germania Ovest.

Devo dire che è decisamente un buon libro, ma non mi è sembrato il capolavoro descritto dalla critica. Certo bisogna armarsi di coraggio per leggere le oltre 1200 pagine che costituiscono il libro. Però, che dire? Evabbè, si può leggere... Perchè no?!?

I have to say that this is a very good book but, in my opinion, it is not a masterpiece as depicted by the critics. Of course, it is necessary a good dose of courage to read more than 1200 pages: but what can I say? You can read it if you wish... Why not?

Un libro decisamente particolare che sembra la descrizione di un sogno (e nemmeno di quelli semplici). L'atmosfera onirica infatti è accompagnata da visioni quasi misteriose, ambientazioni irreali, personaggi circondati da un alone di magia e chi più ne ha più ne metta.

Difficile classificare questa opera: un romanzo fantastico, un'allegoria, un misto di noir e astrazione filosofica. Il libro rimane comunque estremamente affascinante. La lettura è sempre gradevole.

Comunque consiglio la lettura a tutti gli appassionati di atmosfere surreali, misteriose ed oniriche.

The oniric climax is accompanied by mistery visions, not-real scenarios, magic figures and characters and so on. In my opinion classifying this book is a rather difficult task: a fantasy tale, an allegory, a mix of noire and philosophical abstraction.

Ci troviamo di fronte ad un libro molto interessante ed istruttivo sotto molti punti di vista. L'autore, attraverso la narrazione storica delle gesta di alcuni importanti guerrieri, samurai e personaggi storici del Giappone, ci descrive come viene vissuta l'idea di "sconfitta" secondo l'etica giapponese (perlomeno quella antica). In particolare la sconfitta, come risultato di una scelta consapevole fatta in coerenza con i propri principi etici ed i propri ideali, diventa un momento non necessariamente negativo, ma quasi di esempio di nobiltà di carattere e di vero eroismo.

Il libro si presenta quindi come un trattato storico-biografico e quasi antropologico. In particolare per noi italiani che viviamo in questi anni fatti di inganni, truffe e sotterfugi questo libro apporta una lezione peculiare: l'importanza cioè di lottare per i propri ideali e crederci fino alla fine. Insomma un libro di grande attualità.

Interessantissimo ed appassionante l'ultimo capitolo dedicato ai piloti kamikaze.

Lettura consigliata a tutti i tipi di lettori, anche se, comunque, il tema trattato implica un certo impegno.

This is a very interesting book according to several points of view. The author, through the historic discussion about some Japanese warriors, samurai and other historic figures, describes how the idea of failure is embedded within the Japanese ethics. In particular failure is described as an aware and deliberate choice made coherently to personal values and principles: in this case failure is not something negative and disruptive but an example of nobility and real heroism.

This is an historical and antropological book: nonetheless for we italians there is also an important lesson to learn. In these material years of cheats, bribes, cynicism we can find some examples about the importance to fight for an ideal and ethical values.

The last chapter, devoted to kamikaze pilots in the 2nd World War, in my opinion is extremely interesting.

I thus suggest this book for all kind of readers even if the issues described are not always easy.

Impareggiabile la figura di Ponzio Pilato e il'interrogatorio a Gesù...

Considering that it has been written in the 30s' it is likely to be particularly modern and still fascinating. It describes a complex network of parallel stories disposed on parallel space and time dimensions.

The arrival of Satan in Moscow... The extraordinary description of Pontius Pilatus and the interrogation to Jesus... Simply outstanding.

This book is a must for a passionate reader and a necessary component of a decent private library. I warmly reccomend its reading to all kind of readers.

Z. Bauman: "Modernità e Ambivalenza/Modernity and Ambivalence"

Come per tutti i libri di Bauman, anche in questo caso ci troviamo di fronte ad un testo importante e, in alcuni momenti, anche un po' impegnativo. Si tratta di un'acuta analisi sul rapporto fra la modernità (e direi anche post-modernità) ed il concetto di ambivalenza nelle sua varie declinazioni in particolare quella risultante dal contatto fra culture diverse.

Il libro pertanto si presenta con una notevole dose di attualità soprattutto in considerazione delle grandi difficoltà che si riscontrano oggi in Italia in tema di gestione dell'immigrazione e del relativo confronto fra culture di popoli diversi da cui scaturisce ambivalenza.

Molto interessanti la prima parte e le conclusioni: più lenta la parte centrale relativa all'esempio delle complesse problematiche dell'integrazione della popolazione ebraica nel contesto europeo.

E' un libro che si può leggere avendo tuttavia un minimo di preparazione in materia.

As already said for other books from Z. Bauman, even in this case this is an important book.

This is an interesting analysis about the relations between the concept of modernity (maybe post-modernity) and ambiguity according to various meanings and implications in particular those involving the problem deriving from the contacts and confrontations among different cultures. This aspect makes this book particularly relevant for many present issues for example for italian society which is currently dealing with many problems related to the management of immigration and the cohabitation of different cultures and the resulting critical and ambivalent role.

The first half and the conclusions of the book are very interesting: the central part, more focused on the example of the problems and history of the integration of the Jewish communities in the european context, is maybe a little bit "slower"

I suggest the reading of this book having however some preparation and inclination to this kind of topics and books.

Libro molto importante (forse un po' datato) sulla condizione femminile e sulle caratteristiche della realtà femminile. Un libro che, nonostante sia stato scritto nel 1949, mantiene intatte le analisi sulle criticità e le problematicità dell'essere "donna" in una società totalmente al "maschile".

Superfluo dire che l'attualità renderebbe indispensabile (se non obbligatorio a scuola) la lettura di questo libro: per le donne (giovani e meno giovani) sarebbe indispensabile per acquisire quella consapevolezza necessaria al riconoscimento della propria individualità e della propria persona mentre per gli uomini (giovani e meno giovani) potrebbe contribuire a cominciare a capire qualcosa dell'"altra metà del cielo".

A very important book about the woman condition and about the characteristcs of the "woman dimension". Even if written in 1949, this book still maintains extremely valid the analyses about those critical and problematic issues in being a woman in a "male society". The relevance of many news about violence against women makes this book a critical tool (maybe its reading should be compulsory at school...) to build a necessary awareness first of all for women themselves. In the same time the reading of this book is essential also for men in order to have some elements to begin to understand the women reality and their dignity.

Sono finite le vacanze ed approfitto per un breve bilancio della lettura dei libri che mi sono portato appresso in spiaggia.

Cominciamo con Josè Saramago ed il suo "Caino".

Possibile che sia stato scritto da Saramago? Siamo proprio sicuri?

Devo dire che avevo recentemente letto "Cecità" e mi era molto piaciuto: molto bella la tecnica descrittiva, lo stile, la trama, le suggestioni e le allusioni, la metafora generale, ecc... ecc...

Qui francamente Saramago non lo riconosco. Forse sono io che non riesco a cogliere le sottigliezze (a me talvolta sembrano quasi infantili...) dell'autore, anche tenendo presente l'interessante punto di vista dell'assassino di Abele. Niente da fare. Un libro che sfiora la dimensione critica della sciocchezza.

Da povero illuso quale io sono, per rifarmi (sic), ho intrapreso la lettura di questo romanzo "La Prigione di Neve" di Jan Elizabeth Watson.

Libro e scrittrice sono stati entrambi molto elogiati dalla critica: anche in questo caso, mai e poi mai fidarsi dei critici.

L'idea di base è molto buona ed interessante (non la svelo per i masochisti che intendono eventualmente acquistare il libro e farsi un'idea personale), ma il racconto è fiacco e strafiacco. Libro modestissimo: un'occasione mancata alla grande. Suggerisco, per il bene dell'umanità, di copiare l'idea e di riscrivere il tutto con una trama decisamente più interessante.

Decisamente più interessante (per gli amanti del genere ovvio) è stato invece questo "Enigma dei Numeri Primi" di Marcus Du Sautoy. Attenzione: non si tratta della "Solitudine dei Numeri Primi". Qui si parla di una cosa seria.
Nonostante si tratti di un bel librone e che affronti numeri primi, teoremi matematici e biografie di tanti matematici (i cui nomi ancora provocano il terrore in generazioni di studenti di liceo scientifico - quando al liceo scientifico si studiava ancora la matematica), la trattazione non è mai tediosa. Anzi suscita sempre molta curiosità ed interesse: alla fine l'autore riesce anche a rendere "digeribile" ciò che la scuola alla fine ci aveva fatto odiare. Complimenti! Consigliabile la lettura.

Roth J. "La marcia di Radetzky/The Radetzky March"

E veniamo ancora una volta a proporre una lettura adatta alle vacanze estive. In questo caso si tratta di un romanzo "classico" (direi quasi un "drammone") piacevole da leggere e non troppo impegnativo. La trama (che ovviamente non svelo) è incentrata in gran parte sulla "saga familiare" avendo sullo sfondo il tramonto dell'Impero Austro-Ungarico.

Insomma si legge bene sotto l'ombrellone: non è lunghissimo e può anche appassionare. Si può leggere tranquillamente spaparanzati al sole...

In brief, this book can be easily read in vacation times: it is not too long and it can attract the attention of young and not-so-young readers...

Proseguo la presentazione di libri che possono essere portati in vancanza sotto l'ombrellone, in montagna, in bici, in campagna, in piscina... Insomma dove vi pare purchè si legga.

Il libro in questione appartiene anch'esso alla categoria dei "classici": personalmente lo ritengo un ottimo libro per la trama trattata (di cui non parlo più di tanto per non rovinare la sopresa), la prosa e più in generale la costruzione pittorica di questa Berlino fra le due guerre che rappresenta un vero e proprio "brodo di cultura".

Penso che l'aspetto più interessante di tutta la storia sia la lotta del protagonista contro l'inevitabile, l'imponderabile, il "vorrei cambiare vita, ma non ci si riesce proprio!". E alla fine stiamo tutti lì a tifare per il protagonista nella sua battaglia contro i mulini a vento, come un Chisciotte del '900 che sembra agitarsi negli ingranaggi di una Metropolis di Fritz Lang.

Sto scrivendo cose forse un po' troppo deliranti. Sarà colpa del caldo. Comunque suggerisco il libro come lettura estiva per tutti i lettori: un libro intelligente, una lettura utile e costruttiva.

The book I'm introducing here can be included in the list of "summer reading", useful companion of vacation times along the beach, in the mountains, in the country... well, wherever you like!

In my opinion, this book is a "classical reading": I think that this is a very good book for the story described, tha way it is described and above all for the splendid painting of the city of Berlin between the two World Wars as a incredible cultural melting pot.

Maybe the most relevant aspect of the story is the struggle of the protagonist against an unavoidable and imponderable fate: "I'd like to change my life, but it is impossible!". Finally one is rooting for this protagonist in his battle against windmills like a modern Quijote on the scenario of Metropolis by Fritz Lang.

Well, I'm chatting too much. I suggest this book to any kind of readers: it's a very good book and an useful and pleasant reading.

Torna l'estate e puntualmente predispongo una piccola lista di libri che a mio parere sono degni di essere portati in vacanza. Si tratta di letture piacevoli e comunque sempre di un certo livello (sempre secondo me ovvio).

Cominciamo la serie di queste letture estive citando un super-classico ovvero "La famiglia Moskat" di Singer. Per gli appassionati delle grandi saghe familiari questo libro rappresenta un "must".

La Storia e la cultura di una componente importantissima della società europea, quella ebraica, vengono elaborate dal vissuto di questa grande famiglia: il risultato è un grande ritratto-affresco di epoche, uomini e donne, fatti grandi e piccoli. Il tutto inghiottito dalla voragine dell'Olocausto.

Libro la cui lettura è consigliata a tutti.

Summer has finally come back and as ususal I have prepared a short list of "summer readings" composed of book in my opinion worth to become "vacations' tools". These are pleasant readings and, in my opinion of course, always high level books.

I have decided to begin this list citing a classic book: "the family Moskat" by Isaac B. Singer. I think that this book is an obliged reading for those enthusiast of the great families' stories.

History and a critical component of the european culture (the Jewish heritage) are described by the "living matter" of this great jewish family: the final result is a complex picture made of time, men and women, big historical as well as small everyday events. Everything finally cancelled by the Holocaust catasrophe.

I suggest the reading to all kind of readers.

I. Illich: "La Convivialità/Tools for Conviviality"

Un libro, molto bello, molto importante, provocatorio, stimolante. Un libro scritto nel 1973 che invece sembra scritto oggi. Tantissime le idee, i concetti, i valori che Illich afferma con forza lungo queste pagine che pesano come una mannaia su tutti noi e sui decisori politici.

Illich ci chiede di svegliarci, di riappropriarci dei nostri diritti e dei nostri doveri nei confronti dell'altro e delle nostre comunità: emerge il concetto di "limite" come unica possibilità di sopravvivenza ecologica, economica e sociale dell'umanità.

Dopo aver letto questo libro non si è più quelli di prima. Se nulla cambia vuol dire che si è proprio irrecuperabili.

Un Libro (con la L maiuscola) che tutti dovremmo avere il buon senso di leggere soprattutto i giovani visto che sono le vittime principali dei modelli e stili di vita che oggi imperano ovunque.

Forza quindi: ordinatelo in libreria, acquistatelo e leggetelo e (perchè no) regalatelo a qualche zuccone che conoscete. Magari si riesce a mettere un po' di luce in qualche testa vuota (e credetemi ce ne sono tante) ...

Immediatamente, perchè non c' più tempo da perdere...

This is a great, stimulating and important book. Written in 1973 but so contemporary: it seems it has been written today. So many ideas, concepts, values Illich delineates in this book: these pages are heavy charges for all of us and our political decision makers.

Illich asks to us a sign of awareness re-aquiring our responsibilities, our rights and our duties towards our communities: he describes the critical role of the idea of limit as pre requisite for an environmental, social and economic survival of mankind.

It is impossible to remain the same after having read this book. If nothing changes in you, it means that there's really nothing to do...

This is a BOOK TO READ. I repeat: this is a BOOK TO READ: we all should read it above all young readers because they are the favourite victims of the present foolish models and lifestyles.

So, come on: lte's buy it and read it. Do it right now because there's no time...

N. Lilin: "Caduta Libera"

Dopo "Educazione Siberiana", Lilin con questo prosegue il suo racconto. Questa volta, dopo la descrizione dell'affresco di vita della città di Bender, viene proposta l'epopea di un uomo trasferito nella guerra di Cecenia.

Questo libro è un vero bombardamento di episodi cruenti di questa guerra di cui noi qui non abbiamo saputo e non sappiamo tuttora assolutamente nulla.

Impressionante. Crudo e brutale come può essere una guerra.

Il libro può piacere e non piacere. Personalmente l'ho letto con una discreta dose di interesse.

This book is a real "bombing" made of terrible episodes of a war about which we know very little. An astonishing, crude and brutal book like a war. I think that some may like this book and someone else may dislike it. I have read it however with a good dose of interest...

Actually I don't know if a translation of this book into other languages is in progress or not.

N. Lilin: "Educazione Siberiana"

Un libro decisamente molto bello.

Come definirlo? Un romanzo, un saggio, un'autobiografia? In fondo è un po' di tutto questo. Una narrazione cruda, senza peli sulla lingua. Alla fine viene fuori uno spaccato di una realtà complessissima: sono cronache di un altro mondo che si svolgono in un angolo di questo mondo. Lo scenario è la Transnistria, la società è quella dei criminali di una città cosmopolita fatta di criminalità nazionali e cosmopolita.

Emerge insomma un ritratto verticale di un'umanità crudele, ma ricca: una cultura che si colloca oltre i nostri schemi mentali, ma che si presenta a noi quasi nobilitata da una vera e propria etica.

Libro scritto direttamente in italiano con traduzioni in molte lingue in fase di realizzazione: assolutamente da leggere.

R. Guénon: "Simboli di scienza sacra/Symbols of Sacred Science"

Un libro difficile, molto difficile. Ho avuto bisogno di molto tempo per leggerlo e rileggerlo più volte per capire, digerire ed assimilare i concetti che l'autore propone in questo preziosissimo libro.

Per questo motivo è molto difficile presentare quet'opera: detto in parole povere, ma molto povere, si tratta di una sorta di vademecum per imparare a riconoscere e ad interpretare correttamente molti simboli "tradizionali" che sono giunti a noi dal passato in forme completamente stravolte. Di questi simboli oggi si è perso quasi completamente il significato.

La lettura di questo libro getta un po' di luce su un mondo interamente oggi avvolto nelle tenebre restituendo allo stesso tempo dignità a dei codici espressivi la cui mancanza è denunciata dalla quasi totale mancanza di senso e di punti di riferimento della nostra epoca.

La lettura è consigliata ad un pubblico esperto e sensibile: per gli altri si consiglia una bella passeggiata (come al solito...)

This is avery difficult book. I have spent a lot of time for reading it several times to understand and assimilate the concepts the author describes in this important book.

For this reason, it's quite difficult for me to describe it: just in few words, it could be considered a sort of guide to learn how to recognize and interpret many traditional symbols which arrived to us from the past often in a very distorted way. The meaning of these symbols today seems completely lost.

The reading of this book may provide relevant contributions in giving some light in a world completely covered by darkness giving, in the same time, dignity to these codes whose lack is expressed by our meaningless everyday life.

I suggest the reading of this book to those having the necessary sensibility and expertize: to the others I suggest, as usual, an healthy walk...

I. Illic: "Elogio della Bicicletta/Energy and Equity"

Questo piccolo libro (di qualche anno fa per la verità) è decisamente interessante. L'argomento centrale è la questione "energia" e il suo uso irrazionale ed eccessivo. Per esemplificare i concetti legati a questa questione l'autore utilizza l'esempio del traffico e della mobilità evidenziando la razionalità della bicicletta a confronto con la sempre più frequente irrazionalità del trasporto automobilistico.

In considerazione del fatto che il libro è stato scritto almeno una trentina di anni fa, c'è da dire che Illic ha saputo quanto meno profetizzare i controsensi del traffico attuale mettendo in luce il paradosso della sempre maggiore lentezza delle gigantesche e potentissime auto di oggi (soprattutto i SUV) strozzate e bloccate per ore nel caos del traffico cittadino (che inquinano e ci rendono obesi fisicamente e psicologicamente) mentre gli spostamenti a piedi o in bici diventano non più una opzione fra tante altre, ma l'unica scelta possibile anche in termini di salute nostra e dell'intero pianeta.

Personalmente in questo libro leggo anche una esemplificazione dei paradossi tencologici dei nostri tempi: ad esempio invece di consumare meno energia si cerca il modo di produrla sempre di più (magari anche con delle enormi e costosissime centrali nucleari) oppure per parlare con qualcuno stiamo le ore su Facebook invece di andarlo a trovare di persona e bere un bicchiere di vino. Insomma viviamo in anni in cui invece di semplificare, cerchiamo tecnologie sempre più complesse che alla fine ci rendono sempre più infelici.

La lettura di questi piccoli-grandi libri serve: eccome se serve!

Considering that this book has been written at least 30 years ago, Illic has been as sort of prophet because he highlighted the paradox of these enormous and highly polluting cars and SUVs which are everyday blocked in huge traffic jams while walking or biking has become the sole option to avoid our physical and mental destruction.

In my opinion, I have found in this book the evidence of the technological paradox of our times: instead of reducing the energy consumption, we are trying to identify always new technologies to consume more (i.e. with big and costly nuclear plants) or instead of making a walk to visit a friend close home we spend many hours with Facebook.

Instead of semplifying, we always are looking for more complicated technologies which finally make us unhappy...

I thus suggest the reading of this book: it is simply useful...

Un libro che, nonostante la lunghezza, si legge tutto di un fiato. Un libro decisamente bello ed importante.

Consiglio la lettura a tutti i tipi di lettori, di qualsiasi età.

Rampini F. "Slow Economy"

Ho acquistato (e letto) questo libro fondamentalmente perchè (lo devo riconoscere) sono stato attirato dal titolo molto accattivante e dall'altrettanto accattivante sottotitolo "Quello che noi occidentali possiamo imparare dall'Oriente".

Essendo molto interessato a queste tematiche (anche per ragioni professionali) e vista l'attualità dei temi affrontati non ho esitato ad acquistarlo senza troppi approfondimenti.

Ecco il resoconto della lettura di questo libro.

Dopo una introduzione che effettivamente tratta, in modo piuttosto superficiale e generico, dell'attuale crisi e recessione (facendo ricorso a concetti neanche molto originali visto che sono stati già da tempo affrontati ed elaborati da "altri" in modo decisamente più approfondito), l'autore si perde completamente.

Il tema è molto importante: "Slow Economy". Ma nel libro non c'è traccia di una declinazione di questo concetto. Passata l'introduzione, l'autore si perde nella descrizione delle sue, neanche particolarmente originali, osservazioni su alcuni Paesi dell'estremo Oriente (Cina in particolare) e sull'India. Sono appunti di viaggio, descrizioni giornalistiche: niente slow economy. Anzi emerge la descrizione degli effetti dei modelli economici occidentali su queste realtà.

L'autore torna poi timidamente a parlare di crisi economica nelle conclusioni.

Forse non ho capito nulla delle intenzioni dell'autore, ma a me, personalmente, questo libro sembra completamente fuori tema ed un'occasione mancata. Malignamente si potrebbe dire che si tratta di una trovata editoriale per vendere, grazie appunto ad un titolo accattivante, una serie di appunti giornalistici sparsi, una raccolta di servizi sotto il cappello di un argomento così importante.

Peccato.

Non è la prima volta che mi capita di incappare in questi libri fiacchi e modesti e quasi sempre scritti da giornalisti che, perdonatemi la cattiveria, si improvvisano economisti, sociologi, antropologi, storici o filosofi. In Italia, a parte Saviano o Terzani, è molto difficile trovare libri adeguatamente approfonditi su temi così importanti scritti da un giornalista.

Un consiglio quindi: se notate un libro con un bellissimo ed attraente titolo su qualche argomento di grande attualità, se l'autore è un giornalista italiano, accertarsi sempre, ripeto sempre, della qualità del contenuto: non si sa mai...

J. Saramago: "Cecità/Blindness"

Un bellissimo romanzo che ha per tema centrale la follia umana causata dalla diffusione di una misteriosa epidemia di cecità.

In questa narrazione, di cui ovviamente non racconto la trama, che viaggia fra il surreale e il metaforico, il vero protagonista è il concetto di "abrutimento" in un mondo di ciechi (sia fisicamente che spiritualmente) dove una parvenza di sentimenti umani riesce a tenere accesa una flebile luce.

Saramago in questo libro mette in scena il delirio umano, la fragilità delle convenzioni che regolano la nostra vita quotidiana, la parodia della sopravvivenza. Insomma cecità oltre ogni limite.

Consiglio la lettura a tutti: la prosa è appassionante e la tecnica di scrittura sopraffina...

In this book (I won't describe the storyline of course) the real protagonist is the concept of human degrade (in a surreal and methaphoric atmosphere) in a scenario made of blind people (in material and spiritual terms) where timid traces of humanity are capable to maintain a weak light still on.

Josè Saramago shows in this book human delirium, the weakness of the conventional rules governing our everyday life, the parody of human surviving. In brief, no-limit blindness.

Un bellissimo ed impegnativo libro uscito postumo, dopo la morte del grande pensatore Ivan Illic. Tanti gli argomenti trattati di grandissima attualità affrontati con profondità di analisi sulle contraddizioni e vicoli ciechi della società contemporanea. Il titolo gioca anche su un doppio significato. In primo luogo la perdita dei sensi come sensorialità dovuta ad una massiccia ed invadente presenza della tecnologia che inibisce l'uso dei sensi e della fisicità umana. Poi c'è la perdita dei sensi come "significati" ovvero l'incomprensibilità di gran parte del nostro quotidiano.

Alcuni articoli che compongono i vari capitoli dell'opera sono maggiormente espressione di una certa "erudizione medievalistica": questo non toglie al libro il suo peso, la sua importanza e la sua bellezza.

Lettura consigliata al lettore dotato di una pur minima preparazione e sensibilità...

This book entails a large number of issues and topics deeply analyzed mainly related to the contradictions and cul-de-sacs of our everyday life. The title shows a double meaning. First of all it is referred to a lack of sense in terms of sensibility caused by the intrusive presence of technology inhibiting human contacts with the physical reality. The other meaning involves the lack of sense in terms of "meanings" or the unintelligible dimension of our everyday life. Some articles composing the chapters are maybe more "erudite" but the book remains important, good, relevant and useful. I suggest it to a reader with at least a minimal cultural knowledge...

Bellissimo romanzo di ambientazione totalmente giapponese. Una storia ricca di poesia e di dettagli dipinti su tela. I dialoghi, i paesaggi, gli interni, i personaggi raccontano di un Giappone tradizionale e legato alle radici del suo passato.

Bello nel suo scorrere lento. Ispira una lettura quasi meditativa. Un libro che si discosta dal racconto classico pieno di colpi di scena e trame mozzafiato. Per questo è consigliata la lettura a chi apprezza la poesia dello sguardo e del silenzio che rendono questo libro "difficile" per il lettore superficiale e "commerciale".

Accidenti che libro! Dall'autore di "Simboli di Scienza Sacra" (che spero di commentare a breve) un'altra opera veramente degna di nota. Anche se scritto nel 1946 questo libro presenta numerosissimi spunti di riflessione per l'uomo contemporaneo. L'autore infatti presenta in questa opera la sua visione "metafisica" e "tradizionale" dei meccanismi di una società morente e di una cultura decaduta ed immiserita all'inverosimile. La prosa è fluida, piuttosto complessa per i temi trattati, talora l'autore secondo me si perde in toni un po' troppo apocalittici e messianici.

Comunque un libro importante, "politico" e difficile, da leggere e rileggere. Lettura non per tutti: serve un buon bagaglio di cultura tradizionale, sensibilità ed illuminazione.

What a book! From the author of "Symbols of Sacred Science" (I hope to comment it here very soon) another very relevant work. Even if written in 1946, this book includes many reflections and considerations useful for the contemporary mankind. The author describes his methaphysical and traditional vision about the mechanisms and dynamics of a died society and a collapsed and impoverished culture. Discussion is fluid but rather complex due to the issues analized; sometimes the author in my opinion uses some too apocalyptic tones.

However this is an important, political and difficult book: its reading is not suitable for all readers. It is necessary a good base of traditional culture and enlightenment.

Un libro molto interessante dell'autore dell'arcinota opera "La Società del Rischio". Il libro si presenta con molti interessanti spunti di riflessione sulle dinamiche delle grandi religioni monoteistiche nel XXI secolo, lo spirito religioso e la religiosità della società contemporanea e sulle problematiche circa la convivenza ed i rapporti fra fedi diverse nell'epoca dei grandi fanatismi, della globalizzazione e dei grandi processi migratori contemporanei.

Un libra tuttavia abbastanza complesso che richiede, anche se scritto in un modo non eccessivamente "tecnico", una certa dimestichezza con determinate problematiche, idee, correnti filosofiche e approfondimenti sociologici: insomma un libro per molti, ma non per tutti.

Resta comunque molto utile la lettura di questo libro che consiglio a chi si interroga sui problemi del presente e le possibilità di prospettive "intelligenti" per il futuro: per gli altri è meglio la TV o, preferibilmente, una bella passeggiatina...

This is a very interesting book written by the author of the well-known book "The Risk Society". This book shows many useful considerations and reflections about the current dynamics within the great monoteistic religions in the XXI century, religiousity and spirituality trends in contemporary society and the problematic dimensions on the relations amongs religions, cultures in this age of great fanatism, globalization and relevant migration flows.

This book is thus rather complex requiring some expertise, even if not written in a too much technical idiom, some knowledge about certain phylosophycal and sociological doctrines, ideas and thoughts.

I consider its reading an useful thing and I suggest it above all to whom is wondering about the present situations and future perspectives and possibilites: for the others, I suggest a good TV show or, better, a good walk in the countryside...

Un libro molto interessante scritto dal fondatore della rete mondiale Terra Madre e di Slow Food. Molti gli spunti di riflessione sul rapporto completamente innaturale che ci lega al cibo, sulle iniziative che vengono intraprese dalle comunità del cibo nel mondo, sulla possibilità di contribuire alla sostenibilità anche attraverso le nostre scelte alimentari.

Insomma un libro pieno di idee, visioni, concetti, utopie, piccoli e grandi progetti comunque di "peso" che possono anche ridare un senso di ottimismo e di speranza, nonostante le tinte molto fosche che costituiscono la premessa di questo libro. "Possiamo veramente fare tutti la nostra parte": questo è il messaggio principale che lancia Petrini in questo libro. "E allora facciamola questa nostra parte" viene da dire alla fine della lettura.

Bellissimo anche il DVD allegato: viene la voglia di mollare tutto e di diventare contadini...

Consiglio la lettura a tutti e subito, soprattutto ai ragazzi e alle ragazze che dovrebbero essere i primi a sentirsi chiamati in causa... Forza! Muoviamoci!

This book (at present I have found only the italian version) includes many relevant issues and topics related to our innatural relations with food, sustainability, food communities' initiatives worldwide etc.

We all can do something to change: this is the focal message of the book's author also starting by food, our consumption models and our everyday diet.

The book includes also an interesting DVD.

I suggest the reading of this book to any kind of readers above all to young readers who are directly and primarly involved in the catastrophic processes in progress...

Yalom I. "Le lacrime di Nietzsche/When Nietzsche Wept"

Un racconto semi-fantastico sui rapporti e le sedute analitiche fra Nietzsche ed il dottor Breuer. Uso il termine "semi-fantastico" perchè, anche se sono presenti molti riferimenti a fatti realmente accaduti, gran parte della struttura del racconto si basa su situazioni di fantasia.

Insomma un racconto di chiara matrice psicoanalitica, vista anche l'esperienza professionale in materia dell'autore.

Francamente non so dire se questo libro mi sia piaciuto o meno. Qualcuno è rimasto entusiasta di questa storia: personalmente ho fatto un po' di fatica per finirlo. Sono però arrivato alla fine e non l'ho interrotto. E comunque di solito non è un buon segno...

Comunque mi permetto di segnalare la lettura di questo libro a chi si appassiona a letture che in un modo o nell'altro si ispirano alla psicoanalisi, ricche di introspezioni e turbamenti. (non è il mio caso!) Per tutti gli altri francamente non so...

A semi-fantasy story about the relations and the psychoanalitycal sessions between Nietzsche and Dr. Breuer. I use the term "semi-fantasy" because, even if many facts cited are real, a larger part of the story is based on fantasy situations.

In brief this is a story highly inspired by psychoanalysis also in consideration of the author's professional experience.

Actually I don't know if this is a good book or not. Someone who has read this book has remained enthusiast of it: I have found some problem in concluding it but I have arrived to the end after all. And this is not however a positive signal...

Anyway, I may suggest its reading to those enthusiasts fo psychoanalysis and introspections. For the others I have actually no suggestion to make...

D. Mendelsohn: "Gli Scomparsi/The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million"

Un bel libro che ha sullo sfondo l'ombra inquietante e drammaticissima dell'Olocausto. A differenza di libri di genere simile, in questo caso l'autore non descrive semplicemente gli aspetti drammatici di questo terribile dramma del XX secolo. Non si tratta di un mero libro di Storia.
L'Olocausto emerge infatti dalla ricerca che fa l'autore di comprendere la sorte di alcuni componenti della sua famiglia travolti da quegli eventi.

Si tratta quindi della Storia di una Storia. La ricerca in giro per il mondo di una serie continua di indizi, ricordi e di tracce molto spesso rimaste incastrate nella memoria di anziani, di lontani parenti, di spettatori a quel tempo bambini...

L'orrore di quella storia accompagna sempre la narrazione che alla fine si ricompone nel fato drammatico di una famiglia.

Il libro è forse un pò lungo e, fatto anomalo per uno scrittore americano, presenta frequentemente dei periodi un po' troppo prolissi tanto che si rischia di perdere il filo del discorso. Il libro però è veramente bello ed è certamente degno di essere letto: da tutti.

A very good book having in the background the dramatic shadow of the Holocaust. Unlike other books on this topic, this is not case of a book of history: Holocaust emerges by the research made by the author about the fate of some members of his family.

This is thus a Story in History, a research almost worldwide of traces, memories and signs which often have remained blocked and hidden in old people mind, relatives, spectators when they were children at that time...

The horror of Holocaust always accompanies the narration which finally finds a recomposition in the dramatic fate of a jewish family.

This book is maybe too long and sometimes, quite strange for an american writer, sentences are too long: sometimes you may have the risk to lose the thread. Anyway. this book is interesting and worth reading: I suggest its reading to all types of readers.

M. Benasayag - A. Del Rey: "Elogio del conflitto/Eloge du Conflict"

Un libro abbastanza complesso dove convivono filosofia, sociologia e politica. Molti sono i riferimenti a Focault e alla sua Biopolitica. Il titolo potrebbe trarre in inganno: l'autore non auspica di certo il ricorso alla violenza o alla guerra. Quello cui si riferisce l'autore è il valore dinamico del confronto, delle differenze in opposizione al conformismo, all'appiattimento, all'assenza di critica.

In questo senso "conflitto" viene distinto dal concetto di "scontro" e viene quindi esaminato come fattore propulsore del cambiamento e delle dinamiche sociali. L'assopimento del conflitto e la sua rimozione dallo scenario sociale diviene pertanto una delle caratteristiche peculiari delle società contemporanee che per questa ragione appaiono anestetizzate ed incapaci di reagire a qualsiasi forma di crisi.

La prima parte del libro mi è apparsa piuttosto macchinosa, teorica e pesante: ho fatto un po' fatica a leggerla. La seconda è decisamente più interessante e propositiva. Si può leggere, (con un pizzico di preparazione però)...

This is a rather complex book where philosophy, sociology and politics are mixed together. Many citations and references to M. Focault and his Biopolitics. The title could be misleading: the author doesn't refer to violence or war. He emphasizes the dynamic role of the "differences", "confrontations" and oppositions against conformism and lack of criticism and awareness.

With regards to this, conflict is taken distinct from "clash" and thus it is examined as critical factor within change processes and social dynamics. The reduction of conflicts and their removal from social scenarios thus becomes one of the main characteristics of the contemporary societies which, for this reason, are likely to be anaesthetized and unable to react to any form of crisis.

The first half of this book, in my opinion, is maybe too theoretical and complicated: it has been rather difficult to me to keep on reading (yawn...). The second half is definitively more interesting. I however suggest the reading of this book (but some theoretical skills are required...)

U. Eco, J.C. Carrière: "Non sperate di liberarvi dei libri/N'esperez pas vous debarrasser des livres"

Un libro che parla di libri. Un libro che parla della passione per la lettura dei libri. Un libro che parla della passione di collezionare libri. Un libro che solletica l'interesse per i libri.

Un interessante dialogo fra due bibliofili; la conversazione è tranquilla e ricca di interessanti aneddoti, mai accademica o nozionistica. Questo genere di libri di solito finisce con lo scadere in una penosissima e noiosissima lezione di saccenza e di arrogante presunzione.

Non è tassativamente questo il caso. La conversazione affascina per la sua discrezione e per la grande quantità di stimoli che riesce a trasmettere al lettore.

Leggendo questo libro viene voglia di leggere...

Consiglio la lettura a tutti soprattutto ai giovani lettori: magari a qualcuno potrebbe accendersi una scintilla di passione per i libri...

This is an interesting dialogue between two bibliophiles: a quiet conversation never academic or technical. Usually this kind of books tend to become a pathetic and boring lesson of "I know all" and arrogant ostentation.

This is not absolutely the case. The dialogue is fascinating for its elegance and clarity and for the great numbers of stimulating topics this book can transmit to the reader.

Reading this book, one has more and more desire to read books.

O. Sacks: Musicofilia/Musicophilia

Un bel viaggio attraverso le relazioni, spesso abbastanza turbolente, fra la mente e la musica scritto da un grande esperto e divulgatore dei meccanismi della mente umana.

La musica in questo libro è la più vera protagonista nel bene come nel male: da una parte Sacks descrive le patologie più o meno comuni legate alla musica e dall'altro descrive la capacità della musica di risolvere altrettante patologie.

Il libro è arricchito, come sempre nei lavori di Sacks, da un gran numero di casi concreti che rendono la lettura piuttosto fluida e piacevole: non è quindi un libro rivolto agli "addetti ai lavori", ma tutti possono trovare interessante la lettura di questo libro.

Io stesso ho riscontrato anche la descrizione e spiegazione di qualche mia fissazione musicale...

In this book, music is a real protagonist positively and negatively: on the one hand, Sacks describes a large numer of pathologies linked to music and on the other hand he describes the capability of music to solve other psycho-neuro pathologies.

This book includes, as usual in this author's books, many concrete cases and examples thus making its reading rather pleasant and fluid. Therefore this book is not directed to "experts" and everyone may find the reading of this book very interesting.

Dopo aver delineato gli aspetti più salienti dell'attuale modello di sviluppo, fondato su una crescita indefinita con lo sfruttamento di risorse limitate e con pesanti ripercussioni di carattere ambientale, economico e sociale, l'autore disegna, anche in modo convincente, le possibilità e le opportunità offerte da modelli legati invece alla sobrietà, alla riscoperta di valori tradizionali, alla prevalenza del ben-essere sul ben-avere, alla centralità delle relazioni umane e dei rapporti con l'ambiente che ci circonda e ci sostiene materialmente e psicologicamente.

Un libro importante, propositivo e di grandissima attualità, se si considera il capolinea generale che la nostra società si trova di fronte (degrado ambientale, etico, politico, sociale ed economico).

After having delineate the more relevant aspects of the current development model, based on a no-limit growth exploiting limited resources with heavy impacts in enviromental, social and economic terms, the author depicts, with a convincing approach, possibilities and opportunities offered by alternative models linked ot sobriety, re-discovering of traditional values, the prevailing of well-being over well-having, the focal role of human relations and the relations with the environment.

I like to define this book, an "important book" also considering the cul-de-sac which our society has currently to deal with (environmental, social, political, ethical and economic degradation). I suggest its reading above all to young readers also because this book is basicly inspired by wisdom (a scarce resource nowadays): technical economic skills are not necessary to read this book...

Si tratta di un libro importante. Certamente non è un libro recentissimo, ma le tematiche trattate e l'intera analisi appaiono di grandissima attualità.

Vengono infatti affrontati in questo libro i delicati temi degli effetti perversi dei paradigmi che attualmente ispirano l'economia e la politica con le loro pesanti implicazioni di natura ambientale, sociale, psicologica. Scienza, filosofia, tecnologie, religione, sono alcuni pilastri di questo importante e bellissimo libro.

Consiglio la lettura a tutti, soprattutto ai giovani: anche se è un testo impegnativo, è bene stimolare il proprio senso di responsabilità e fare i conti con le problematiche che ci circondano nel nostro quotidiano.

This is an important book. Even if not particularly recent, the topics discussed are current emergencies. The perverse effects of those paradigms presently inspiring economy and politics, with their implications in terms of environment, social and psychological degradation, are the focal points of this books. Science, philosophy, technology, religion are some key dimenions in this important and great book. Un libro organizzato in parte in forma di intervista ed in parte come carteggio fra Hillman ed il giornalista-scrittore Ventura. I temi affrontati nel libro sono moltissimi, ma sono discussi in modo piuttosto confuso e superficiale. Il libro talvolta appare anche piuttosto sciocchino e banale.

Francamente ho letto molti altri libri di Hillman di qualità di gran lunga superiore. Questo mi sembra il risultato di una scelta puramente commerciale fatta sulla base di un titolo piuttosto accattivante che però nasconde il vuoto completo del libro.

Da leggere solo se non si ha niente altro da fare (consiglio una bella passeggiata in campagna) e niente altro di meglio da leggere...

Che peccato!

This book is organized in part as an interview and in part as an exchange of letters between James Hillman and the writer Michael Ventura. Many topics are discussed in this book but, unfortunately, in a rather confused and superficial way. Sometimes this book also appears quite silly and banal.

I have actually read many other books by Hillman showing a definitively better quality than this one. This book, in my opinion, is likely to be the result of a purely business choice based on an appealing title which however hides the book's complete void.

You can read this book just if you have nothing better to do (go out for a walk in the country for example: it is better...) or nothing better to read...

Un bel romanzo con una storia quasi "thriller" che in alcuni momenti può ricordare "Il Nome della Rosa" di Eco. Bello lo scenario dove si svolge la storia e gli intrighi fra i miniaturisti: una Instabul del XVI secolo dove si confondono razze, uomini, donne, religioni, sette, culture, oggetti, suoni, odori, e soprattutto, colori.

Le immagini ed i colori sono i veri protagonisti di questo affescinante libro che consiglio a tutti di leggere e di portare con sè in vacanza come una buona compagnia.

In my opinion the background imagine of a XVI century Instabul is particularly fascinating with a mix of cultures, sounds, objects, men and women, sects, religions, and above all, colours.

Un simpaticissimo libro da portarsi sotto l'ombrellone. Io stesso, che ho letto questo libro più volte, ricordo chiaramente di averlo letto per la prima volta alcuni anni fa per l'appunto il più delle volte sulla spiaggia durante una vacanza al mare.

L'arguzia e l'umorismo acuto di Groucho Marx emergono nitidamente in questa bellissima raccolta di lettere.

Un libro dalla lettura leggera e gradevole adatto a tutti i palati e tutti i gusti: serve poco impegno ed il tempo passa rapidamente ed in modo utile soprattutto nelle ore di massimo relax e di caldo insopportabile...

Non ci sono scusanti: trovate del tempo quindi per leggere...

C. G. Cesare: "De Bello Gallico"

Chi non conosce Giulio Cesare? Arcinoto come condottiero, come politico, come protagonista spregiudicato della politica romana del crepuscolo della Res Publica. Eppure Giulio Cesare è stato anche un fine scrittore.

Uno splendido esempio di questo è proprio il De Bello Gallico (La Guerra Gallica): si tratta di un interessantissimo diario di guerra redatto con uno stile semplice, secco, diretto e chiarissimo.

Cesare in questa opera descrive gli scontri, gli spostamenti, le perdite, l'organizzazione militare. La parte più interessente secondo me è costituita tuttavia delle puntuali descrizioni degli aspetti non-militari dell'intera campagna.

Con lo stesso stile preciso ed acuto Cesare annota le abitudini dei Galli, dei Germani e dei Britanni,
le loro caratteristiche, le loro superstizioni e paure, il loro modo di vivere quotidiano. Insomma alla fine emerge un quadro umano storico-antropologico di grandissimo interesse e fascino.

Un libro di grande fascino e di agevole lettura che consiglio a tutti, soprattutto ai giovani.

J. Caesar is a well known historal Roman figure, warlord, clever politician, unquestioned protagonist of Ancient Rome during the decline of the Roman Res Publica towards the creation of the Roman Empire.

Well Caesar was also a fine writer and an extremely relevant example of his writing activity is the "De Bello Gallico" (On The Gallic War): this book is an interesting war-diary written in a very plain, clear and direct style.

Caesar in this book reported blattles and clashes between Roman soldiers and Gauls, casualites, military organization etc. but, in my opinion, the most interesting parts involve the non-military aspects of the Gallic campaign.

Caesar in fact describes, with the same clear and direct style, customs, habits, superstitions, everydaylife of Celts, Germans and Britons. It emerges an interesting and fascinating description of the human side of the war with relevant historical and anthropological implications.

A fantastic book whose reading is suitable for the large public (in particular young readers).

Un romanzo bellissimo denso di cinismo e di decadenza umana, sociale ed epocale. Una storia che ha come sfondo la Prima Guerra Mondiale, l'Africa, l'America e la Parigi del primo dopoguerra.

Inutile dire che Cèline è una delle voci più vibranti, graffianti, contrastate e contrastanti della letteratura europea del XX secolo: si tratta di uno di quegli scrittori che o si amano o si odiano senza mezzi termini. La stessa sorte tocca a questo libro che personalmente io trovo affascinante e notevolmente carico di poesia e filosofia.

Sicuramente questo è uno dei libri che mi ha affascinato di più...

Un libro veramente bello. Un viaggio lungo le strade americane a cavallo di una vecchia motocicletta. Ma è anche un viaggio esistenziale ed etico. Un diario fatto di visioni, immagini, pensieri, impressioni: il rapporto fra l'uomo e la tecnologia, l'uomo e la scienza, l'uomo ed il mondo.

Un libro che è un racconto, ma che è anche filosofia e religione...

Consiglio vivamente la lettura soprattutto per i giovani: se ne esce sicuramente molto arricchiti. Non dovrebbe mancare in una biblioteca privata degna di questo nome.

La trama è fiacca, i dialoghi scontati, la lettura noiosa...

Si tratta forse di un libro buono per gli adolescenti o per un certo tipo di adolescenti: forse anche per questo motivo non l'ho apprezzato più di tanto vista anche la cretineria dilagante fra tanti ragazzotti e ragazzotte di questi anni più recenti.

Senza bisogno di ricordare la solita citazione della mensa di Trimalcione, l'attualità di questo romanzo consiste proprio nella capacità dell'autore di mettere in scena e di rendere vere protagoniste la volgarità e l'arroganza del "parvenu": insomma proprio come oggi...

Direi che si tratta di un libro certamente da leggere, soprattutto se si trova una traduzione abbastanza moderna ed attuale.

Si tratta di un libro molto interessante che, con un linguaggio molto chiaro, affronta il tema della intrusione massiccia delle pratiche terapeutiche nella nostra vita quotidiana.

Alcuni dei temi trattati sono particolarmente interessanti: il problema della depressione dei bambini, la demonizzazione del cosiddetto "bambino iper-attivo", l'incapacità diffusa di gestire il fallimento, la minaccia continua per la nostra autostima, sindromi comportamentali di ogni genere, lo stress ovunque per ogni cosa, la diffusione della cultura della paura e del rischio...

In sostanza emerge un quadro poco rassicurante di come oggi siamo spinti a ritenerci impotenti, deboli ed insicuri: basta pensare alle immagini dei reality shows o alla grande diffusione dei pianti in TV.

Il risultato è una società a "resistenza zero" ove ogni forma di pensiero divergente è anestetizzata e considerata una forma di isteria e schizofrenia.

Sicuramente un libro da leggere...

This is a very interesting book which, with a clear language, analyzes the issue of the massive intrusion of therapy culture in our everyday life.

Some of the topics discussed are particularly interesting: the problem of depression in children, the demonization of the so-called hyperactive child, the diffused incapability to manage personal failure, continuing manaces to our self esteeem, behavioural syndromes of any kind, stress everywhere for anything, the diffusion of the culture of fear and risk...

In brief, it emerges a discouraging scenario which everyday convinces us about our impotence, weakness and lack of self-confidence: just looking to the reality shows and to the great diffusion of tears in TV to confirm this.

The result is a "zero-resistance" society where any kind of diverging thinking is anaesthetized and considered as an expression of hysteria and schizophrenia

Si tratta di un libro molto interessante che descrive, con un linguaggio discorsivo e divulgativo, molti meccanismi che si collocano alla base dell'attuale schizofrenica società del consumo irrazionale.

Molti sono gli spunti di riflessione ed i temi che vengono trattati dall'autore: la lettura comunque è agevole e mantiene la fludità che si addice all'inventore del concetto di "società liquida".

Insomma, penso che sia un libro utile da possedere nella propria biblioteca e di cui suggerisco la lettura. Soprattutto ai maniaci dello shopping inutile e ai più giovani (che sono le vittime preferite di questo sistema economico impazzito): hai visto mai che magari qualcuno si destasse dal proprio torpore esistenziale...

This book has been widely praised becoming rapidly an in-fashion reading. I have been very curious to read it.

The story could be rather interesting but the book in general seemed to be quite weak and weary: I can't understand actually the reasons for such a success.

I've got often the impression that this book is quite insipid and "watered down": I mean it seems that the book is grinding on maybe for a lack of ideas. The erudite arguments of the protagonist are useless and non-sense...

Someone thinks that this book is a good reading for teens but I disagree, I'm not sure of it...

Sincerely this book is likely to be a lost occasion...

Libro ampliamente osannato dalla critica e diventato di gran moda. Per curiosità ho deciso quindi di leggerlo.

La storia potrebbe essere di per sè interessante, ma il libro mi è sembrato fiacco ed inconsistente: francamente non capisco le ragioni di tanto successo...

Spesso ho avuto anche l'impressione che il libro sia piuttosto annacquato cioè tirato per le lunghe in più punti forse per mancanza di idee. Inutili le elucubrazioni erudite della portinaia protagonista del libro.

Qualcuno sostiene che sia un buon libro per gli adolescenti, ma personalmente non ne sono tanto sicuro...

Sinceramente mi sembra un'occasione mancata.

This book has been at the core of great interest from the critics above all about the description of the terrible events of the Shoah according to the Nazis' point of view rather than the victims'.

I have read this book following these discussions and observations but I have got to say that all this has created in me great expectations many of which have been rather frustrated.

In my opinion, this book is too long (more than 900 pages in the italian version) and often the author has pointed out too many demonstrations of phylosophical and literature erudition which maybe weigh down the reading. The first part and the conclusion are impressing and very well written but I think that the central part of the book is too slow.

Surely this is a very interesting book capable to offer many reflection opportunities; but the excessive length and cultural ostentation may hide those other positive interesting aspects of the book.

At the moment I not sure yet if I like this book or not...
Surely I have worked hard to read it till the end...

Questo libro è stato al centro di molto interesse da parte della critica soprattutto per aver presentato la terribile realtà della Shoah dalla parte non tanto delle vittime quanto dei carnefici.

Ho letto questo libro solleticato dalle discussioni e dalle polemiche, ma devo dire che alla fine tutto questo polverone ha creato in me delle aspettative molte delle quali sono state però frustrate.

Il libro è molto lungo (più di 900 pagine) e spesso l'autore si sofferma piuttosto lungamente in dimostrazioni di erudizione filosofica e letteraria che appesantiscono la narrazione. Molto riuscita la parte iniziale e quella finale, troppo lenta quella centrale.

Certamente un lavoro interesante capace di offrire molti spunti di riflessione; tuttavia la lunghezza eccessiva, l'ostentazione culturale finiscono con mettere un po' in ombra gli aspetti più positivi ed interessanti del libro.

Attualmente non so dire se questo libro mi sia veramente piaciuto o meno...

Sicuramente ho fatto un po' di fatica a finirlo...

I have read this little book several times. It contains interesting personal author's meditations clearly and precisely written. I have always found many reflection opportunities from the reading of this book even if the author came from different spiritual experinces than mine.

In this period of absolute cynism, this book is likely to be as a small candle light providing its contribution for the re-discovery of the idea of "value" everyone should have in his own soul.

I suggest its reading but it is necessary the right mind and predisposition...

Ho letto e riletto spesso questo piccolo libro. Contiene una serie di meditazioni personali dell'autore scritte in modo immediato e chiaro. Ho sempre trovato in questo libro occasioni di riflessione anche se l'autore proviene da esperienze spirituali molto diverse dalle mie.

In questa epoca di cinismo assoluto, questo libro appare come un piccolo contributo verso la riscoperta dell'idea di "valore" che ciascuno di noi possiede nel proprio intimo.

Consiglio la lettura a tutti, ma ci vuole un po' di spirito giusto...

This book is presently considered as one of the classics of the contemporary historyography thanks also to the good choice of the title. With this definition the author surely provides a clear snapshot of the XX century.

I've got to say however that I actually prefer other Hobsbawm's books, maybe more directed to specialistic readers, than this one: sometimes it seemed to me rather confused, sometimes boring, sometimes it seemed to me that the attempt to create a popular book failed because too many things are given for granted even when they are not...

In brief, for the first time, I'm pointing out a book I didn't appreciated so much.

I suggest the reading of this book however, with the above mentioned limitations, to history enthusiasts, like me, above all for vanity and snob reasons: just to say to have read it and criticize it as I'm doing right now...

E. Hobsbawm: "Il Secolo Breve"

Questo testo è considerato ormai un classico della storiografia contemporanea grazie anche alla fortunata scelta del titolo. Con questa definizione sicuramente l'autore riesce a fornire un'interessante istantanea del XX secolo.

Devo dire però che ho preferito altri libri di Hobsbawn, magari meno noti e più diretti ad un pubblico di lettori più specialistico, a questo: in alcuni tratti mi è sembrato confuso, in altri noioso, in altri ancora mi sembra che la tentazione di realizzare un'opera divulgativa sia affogata nelle troppe cose "date per scontate" e che scontate non sono...

Insomma una volta tanto segnalo un libro che non mi è particolarmente piaciuto.

Consiglio la lettura di questo libro, con le precauzioni di cui sopra, agli appassionati di storia, come me, più che altro per vanità e per snobbismo: per dire cioè di averlo letto e per poterlo criticare come sto facendo io ora, in questo momento...

Questo è un libro che ha molti livelli e chiavi di lettura: è un diario di viaggio attraverso l'Australia, un percorso spirituale nella cultura dei nativi australiani, un viaggio religioso, un saggio di antropologia...

E' un libro bellissimo dello spostarsi da un luogo all'altro sia in senso fisico che metafisico e di grandi orizzonti.

Consiglio la lettura soprattutto ai giovani e agli amanti della natura e del viaggio anti-turistico.

I warn that this is not a crime or horror novel but something more complex where the story at the core of this book is finally less important. The Golem himself, the wellknown claymonster, seems to be a ghost metaphor of the hallucinations pervading the whole story.

After all, the story begins with an exchange of a hat...

Premetto che non si tratta di un romanzo giallo o di genere horror, ma di qualcosa di più profondo dove alla fine la trama stessa della vicenda che viene narrata passa di fatto in secondo piano. Lo stesso Golem, l'arcinoto mostro d'argilla, sembra più uno spettro, metafora delle stesse allucinazioni che pervadono la narrazione.

Il tutto parte dallo scambio di un cappello...

This is a very good book which, with great competence and out of the ordinary, describes the most relevant and essential aspects of the ancient greek culture.

I consider this book an essential tool to understand and broaden our knowledge not only about history but also about important elements of our present culture.

Its reading is pleasant and not excessively for specialists. Surely this is not a book suitable for all readers but I suggest its reading to history and ancient culture enthusiasts.

Bellissimo libro che, con grande attenzione e fuori dai soliti luoghi comuni, descrive gli aspetti più importanti ed essenziali della cultura greca classica.

Direi che rappresenta uno strumento indispensabile di approfondimento e di conoscenza non solo della storia ma anche di importanti elementi della nostra cultura.

La lettura è molto gradevole e non eccessivamente tecnica. Certamente non è per tutti: comunque lo consiglio agli appassionati di storia e cultura antica.

M. Yourcenar: "Memoirs of Hadrian"

This is a beautiful book where the author re-writes the memoirs of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Reading this book is pleasant being rich of tones of phylosophy, art, ancient religion, love, culture, spiritual travel with a veil of disenchantment and nostalgia.

I have read this book some years ago and I have appreciated it very much. Probably I'll read it again also because usually a second reading make you notice aspects and details passed up during the first reading.

This is a book everyone can read: I suggest its reading possibly outdoor, in the Nature, under a tree, because often the place where we read plays an important role having its harmony with the book we are reading.

In this case, I wouldn't read this book at home, sitting on a sofa, in the dining room; these things have nothing to do with it.

It is as in the case of wines: books should be combined with a precise mood, location, background music, seasons, drinks, weather,...

so, as for wines, this is the following book-tasting table:
